I think that once again I have got tonsillitis.

What are the best ways to treat it other than getting my tonsils removed?

Soluble paracetamol. Dissolve it in some water and gargle it for as long as you can before swallowing. Nurse's advice and it's always worked for me.

If it's more than just a sore throat though, you should be feeling pretty groggy and spaced-out.

Slightly off topic but I had what I thought was man flu, then tonsillitis, earlier this year. After a week or so off work and having not eaten for 4-5 days, and barely consuming water, I was took to hospital by my old dear, turns out it was glandular fever!

Basically keep on top of it and if it gets worse get to the docs man!

Penicillin.

Of the over the counter remedies Tyrozettes are the most effective I have found as they contain small amounts of antibitoc. Most non prescription remedies just contain antiseptic to numb the pain.

Gargle with soluable asprin as well.

Be careful with this, like you I normally just leave and suck a few lozenges.

Infection spread into my throat and jaw and closed my airway with the swelling.

A trip to A&E and some IV antibiotics got rid of it in the end but I was in bits.

See the quack, get drugs.

I have also experienced this, its nasty. Thought i had a bad sore throat left it and then ended up with a throat abscess, luckily it went with a months worth of antibiotics. The other option was having the thing lanced under local anesthetic!

Antibiotics only work with bacterial tonsillitis, I've had the viral form once, according to my doctor, and there's not much you can take for it. Thankfully it was quite a bit milder than the bacterial version.

Essentially, so they tell me, tonsillitis is just your tonsils getting overwhelmed with the incoming bacteria, as generally your tonsils play an active role in stopping nasty stuff in your mouth getting into your bloodstream (Or something, could be a complete myth, I'm just repeating what the doctor said).

The medical profession doesn't like removing them these days apparently, as we do need them.

I asked, as I had it 4 times in a 12 month period about 10 years ago, and was always prone to it from an early age, until my late 20's. The doctor reckoned I'd 'grow out of it eventually', I took that to mean my immune system would eventually figure out how to deal with it.

To be fair, after that last 4 times, I've not had it since, so I guess the medics were right in that sense.
