Stop breathing when I fall asleep!?!?
Discussion
I know I'm going to scare myself silly by taking this to the inter web, but last night I went to bed,the last night on my ship before crew change to go home for Xmas, and every time I nodded off I immediately woke up in some sort of surge of panic, and usually gasping for breath. This happened several dozen times all night, I don't recall actually getting any sleep and I feel like crap today.
I have two long flights to the Philippines, next one leaves in three hours, and I just stepped off a two hour flight an hour ago. I tried to nap on the flight and the same thing happened again.
I started getting all panicky and wanted to get off the plane, as it hadn't even taken off at that point.
There has been a lot of stress at work over the last few weeks, as my ship is shutting down and nobody knows what the job situation will be after Xmas. Plus I've been battling with Citibank for a week, and some other hectic stuff.
Am I dying? Is this stress related? Do I have some neurological disaster forming? This is scaring the poop out of me.

Sounds like Sleep Apnoea. Get yourself to the doctors, but try not to worry. You aren't dying, but it certainly needs addressing.
I get this with my anxiety when I'm stressed. You're not gonna die but I know how much it freaks you out. Stay off the stimulants like coffee and try and do stuff that chills you out and get yourself to the quacks.
Yep it's SA.
Are you overweight (sorry) as it doesn't help.
You can get a "darth vader" mask that forces air under pressure into you throat. Mate had it and got a machine and had the first goodnights sleep in 16 years ( before diagnosis). 500 quid for a portable near silent unit.
Don't panic. Lot if it about.

Thanks for the info. I was thinking it was sleep apnea but scared myself off the idea after visualizing myself carting some air pump offshore with me.
I am overweight, and probably put a bit more on over the last month. Not massively oversize though, and I haven't had this before. I do have a sort of phobia about not being able to breathe, which is what has scared me so much.
Only chance I have to get to a doctor is in the Philippines, which worries me a bit...

I have been diagnosed with sleep apnea and it's more an indicator of poor lifestyle choices than a disease in itself . Apparently I've had it most of my life but I don't tend to wake myself up just scare the Mrs.having a glass of vino before bed certainly makes it much more likely and I'm a wee bit overweight too. Any kind of exercise which gets your respiratory system working will help and I found that anti allergy pillows make for a better nights sleep. Don't stress about it make a few small changes and you'll be fine

Its anxiety and panic, like a mini panic attack. You're tired and stressed. HthI have two long flights to the Philippines, next one leaves in three hours, and I just stepped off a two hour flight an hour ago. I tried to nap on the flight and the same thing happened again.

No booze, no caffeine, more sleep, more relaxation, less stress, good food, multivitamin, switch off your mind, massage, hypnotherapy, exercise and meditation.
Sounds like you may be overweight, stressed, drink a lot, dont have a good diet, work hard and don't switch off and dont exercise!
Not surprising but take it as a sign, it can get worse and could turn into full blown panic attacks and medication if you're not careful.

Well, no booze for four weeks, and the work is not so hard, but there has been a lot of stress over various things the last few weeks.Sounds like you may be overweight, stressed, drink a lot, dont have a good diet, work hard and don't switch off and dont exercise!

Diet is fairly good, I just eat too much of it. No soft drinks, exercise fairly often, but still 'packing a few extra pounds'......
I am 53 and I think I need to get that aspect in order or things are only going too get worse in the future.
Just arrived in Qatar and I d I'd get some sleep on the plane, feel a lot better now. The worry of what was happening was the biggest stress I've had for a long time.
It's not Sleep Apnea as you often don't wake up, not fully at least, and not as soon as you start to drop off to sleep.
It's anxiety. I used to get EXACTLY the same symptoms when I had money and stress issues when setting out self employed. You need to de-stress and the problem with evaporate all by itself. A few paid weeks off work will work wonders.
And you're not about to die even though it feels exactly like this. You will eventually get so tired you will have a full nights sleep and you WILL wake up next morning. I bet you. Make a bet with yourself you will wake up next morning. The self-psychology really helped me.

Most people until their 50s are fairly healthy with no major issues but your body is firing a warning shot at you. It is inevitable as you get older your health will get worse.
Start taking time out to walk, drink water Nd relax and cut right back on the booze
Good luck
Indeed. Anxiety has little to do with being unhealthy in my personal experience. I was fit about 12% BF, was walking and biking about 100km a week, doing resistance training 3-5 times a week, didn't smoke and had a religiously healthy diet keeping track of macros, vits and mins. Even drinking was only a bottle of red or two a week.
I wasn't even working much 5- 10 hours a week, but that lack of work was ultimately the cause.
Anything can cause anxiety, even anxiety about anxiety, so of course it can become a recursive loop... heart palpitations (fluttering sensation in your chest) will be the next symptom that feels like death is just round the corner, but it won't be this at all.
I changed nothing about my life other than got enough clients to be financially secure and all symptoms that Dr.'s couldn't diagnose simply evaporated in a few days. In fact they evaporated so gradually and I had become so accustomed to them it took a couple of weeks before I notice they had gone.
Like everything, find the root cause of the problem, fix it and everything else will tend to itself.
