Toothache... painkillers having no effect

Started yesterday but a combination if Ibuprofen and Paracetamol was enough to get me to sleep.

Gotten progressively worse today (no dentists open) and it's now at the stage where I can only get temporary relief for a minute or two buy holding cold water in the mouth around the area. Pain returns as water warms, spit and add more water.

Been taking the painkillers again but no success. Tried swilling whiskey around it for a few minutes but all that did was burn and offer no pain relief...

So what else can I do so I can get to bed? The local dental relief service is only open tomorrow from 7pm-10pm and I reckon I'll have taken some pliers to it long before then

Have you got any tea tree oil? I got some temporary relief once by placing a small bit of t.t oil soaked cotton wool on the offending tooth. Tastes/feels pretty unusual but was desperate at the time.

What about whisky and the ibuprofen together?

If you really are desperate have any friends/neighbours nearby got any, or any stronger painkillers? Any places nearby open 'til midnight or anything?

Failing that perhaps call that NHS line - maybe a doctor could visit with something?

You have my sympathy OP, fewer things worse than bad toothache!

As above really oil of cloves works well if you can get hold of it.

As Vince says Orajel is your best bet. But it sounds like you've got an abcess.
The thing you need is antibiotics, do you have any kicking about? They may start to kick in by this afternoon if you're lucky.
BTW try not to drink the water you're swilling around the tooth as I once did this after having the same problem and then a few days later read of a bloke dying after drinking around 10 litres of water for the same problem.
My sympathies as I know how much pain you're in.

This sounds like pain I had with an abscess. I just hope you don't get fobbed off with antibiotics if that is the case.

Nice to see the useful suggestions above. Another vote for codeine but I was reading it doesn't work well for everyone.

Call your dentist's emergency number. It is not an abscess yet. Sounds like irreversible pulpitis. Antibiotics will not work. A doctor should not come out just to supply some painkillers. It is not life threatening. Call your dentist!

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I took some codeine and ibruprofen just before bed, stuck an icecube between my gum and cheek and got to sleep in the end.

Dentist not far from Belfast getting me in later hopefully!

The relief clinic in City hospital is open 7-10pm tonight if it becomes bag again, but right now the 15/500 Co-Codamol is doing the trick

How's it going Artoir, did you get to see anyone? You don't want to just throw painkillers at something like that. It's either irreversible pulpits or an abscess and just covering up the symptoms may mean more trouble/pain down the line!
