Extra pounds on over Christmas, well since last June actually, so is anyone else on the 5-2 diet again? I found the support on here very helpful last year. Or is the 5-2 soooo last year?

Yep, since July last year 2-3lbs crept on up to Christmas when a further 3lbs seemed to miraculously appear!

So started today and I was expecting the worst but it's been fine so I think I'll target 8-10lbs over the next 6 weeks.

I am still on it. Too much booze and snacks over Christmas meant that I have put about half a stone back on (although I was in a "plateau" regarding weight loss anyway) so we will see how long it takes to shift.

It doesn't alter the fact that I am over 60lb lighter than I was 16 months ago.

The whole idea of 5:2 is its a permanent lifestyle (can adopt 6:1 if preferable). This is the only way to realise the true long term health benefits. Seeing as its so easy I don't know why anyone wouldn't at least keep fasting one day per week having previously got used to it.

No excuse...better insulin sensitivity resulting from fasting would aid muscle gain and allow even more cals the rest of the week wink

I don't want to eat more cals for the rest of the week!

Is the first bit really true? There's so much stuff flying around the web about what's right and what's wrong. Half the info on how to get big conflicts the other half!

Very true. Apart from hols (where friend made brekky) I have stuck to mine. It really is very easy, and provides the benefits you state.

Better insulin sensitivity = better muscle gain to fat gain ratio

I doubt the difference a one day fast makes will be noticeable but the effect is there nonetheless. Surely from a health point of view alone it makes sense? You shouldnt be trying to gain weight too fast anyway...counter-productive IMO.

Ah yes.

But then people say you need to eat once every 13 minutes?

To reduce insulin-sensitivity perhaps...

High meal frequency ONLY benefits bodybuilders on vast amounts of anabolics, GH and insulin. They could not otherwise eat the calories to reach such preposterous size.

There's bulky and then there's being shredded at 250lbs...I refer to the latter! laugh For virtually ANYONE else...an IF approach is better!

Um. I don't measure but my BF% is probably around 13%. At the moment, I'm trying to build size without getting too fluffy. Seems to be working so far. Mainly compound lifting but adding more shoulder work in for that tapered look.

I have an athletic look (people have commented positively) but not "Oh my God, look out, roid alert!"

I'd love to get to a point where people think I dabble in roids (without touching them, obviously).

IMO no need for any shoulder work other than DB/BB Pressing and plenty rear delt work, superfluous exercises just cause niggles IME. Get a stronger press and your shoulders will grow, but as a natty you will never have cannonball delts so no point in training like a BBer in this regard. Just my 2p smile

I want cannonball delts!

At the moment, I'm only doing shoulder press, front raises, lateral raises, upright rows. Feels like it's hitting front, side and rear delts. I mean I can feel it today after yesterday's session.

Seriously, if you care about long term shoulder health you will bin the lateral raises and upright rows. Upright rows have to be one of the worst gym exercises people do IMO. Lateral raises are not as terrible but I find I get clicking/pain from them. Front raises are rather pointless so long as you are DB/BB Benching in some shape or form.

You'd be much better served by simply focusing on getting stronger in the bread and butter pressing exercises. If you can bash out ten reps with the 40kg DBs on shoulder press you will have decent shoulder development! Any benefits to muscle gain from doing the extra stuff you mention are FAR outweighed by the injury risks.
