Treadmill or track, which do you find faster?
Discussion
Track.
On a treadmill it's difficult to push yourself. In the real world if you push and have to fall back on pace you're ok. On a treadmill you're in trouble doing that or have to bail early flailing at the controls, so most people generally run a bit under their capable pace for safety/comfort/peace of mind.
All but the best treadmills take you for a ride anyway. So treadmills are good for jogging and cruising but flawed when it comes to really pushing yourself.
It's for that reason I never do serious HIIT, power or sprint training on a treadmill with clients... and simply never use a treadmill myself.

I am new to running, only been at it for 18 months or so. I do a mixture of road and TM but this time of the year it is nearly always treadmill. I have done a few 10k runs on the road and you are quicker on the TM, but there is no hills or wind to slow you down.
I do find it very mind numbing on the TM mainly because you can hit that stop button anytime you like where as on the road you have to keep on going if you want to make it back home, i have done much longer distance on the road then on the TM mainly as i can zone out and push further on the road.
As a side note, what is your average running speed on the TM and what time do you run ?
At the moment i do interval for 5k IE run at 14 kph for 1 min then walk for 1 min and repeat. The fastest i have ever run is 20 kph but only for 1 min.
For long runs 45 mins + i start of at 10.5 and end around 13.5

I do more tradmill running i dont mind it at one of the gyms i go to as i can watch people swimming or tv it takes the edge off it.
I like running outside but more so in winter, I hate running in the heat.
Id say i was probably about the same on both. At least on a mill im running at a constant pace. When im outside my split times seem to go up and down quite a lot tbh even though i use a running app on my phone. Tells me what im doing every 0.5m i find myself having to kick on a bit sometimes if my split was slow when i didnt even realise id slowed down.

I'd class that as an important part of training (assuming someone is training for a specific event e.g. a 10k/HM/Marathon). Learning to read and understand the signals their body is providing to enable them to accurately judge effort and pace is valuable training.Edited by ewenm on Wednesday 15th January 09:50
Yes I agree. Think at the moment it's probably because I've only been doing the odd one hear n there for the last 6 months. Seemed to be a lot more consistent when I ran regular.
I'm not training for anything I just mix up training a bit sometimes more weights sometimes more cardio keeps it interesting.

There are pros and cons to running on the treadmill or outside and they are easy to work out for your own needs.
The treadmill is good because it usually means it is in a gym (away from the elements) and you can run on a fixed programme so a good way to monitor your fitness.
Outside is great because you have natural variation as well as the fresh air etc.
For Sparks E39 - for what you are about to undergo you need to be outside. Running a 1.5 mile circuit is fine but that is only half the battle. Concentrating on variation is key. You need to do some interval training to get anaerobic fitness up, longer distances for stamina, cross country routes to go over obstacles and then get back up to speed quickly and generally improve aerobic fitness. Circuit training is also a good thing to be doing.

Lol. Dont be 100% set on surface fleet. You'll be streamed once you finish training. Been there myself.
