The missus is 35 weeks pregnant (3rd baby) and has been drinking about 12 litres or more of water a day (and passing an equally large amount of urine) since the start of the 3rd trimester.

I think these are classic signs of gestational nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (rather than diabetes mellitus). This has not yet been formally diagnosed, although the GP, 1 midfife and 2 (non consultant) obstretrician Doctors have all said “it’s one of those pregnancy things”. A recent visit to a consultant obstetrician then had her (dr) scurrying around organising all sorts of tests.

I have a few questions for any doctors (specifically paediatricians) that may be on here.

1) As I understand it, this condition is caused by ADH being broken down by the placenta. Is this likely to be affecting the baby as well, i.e. crossing the placenta?
2) What checks can be done on the baby immediately post partum to prevent it suffering from potentially life threatening chronic dehydration?
3) Although the Mum is expected to “recover” from condition within 4-6 weeks after giving birth, if affected, would the baby also recover normal renal function?
4) As the missus is so knackered from lack of sleep (due to getting up to go to the loo), she’s now worried about getting exhausted through labour, and also the current chronic need to drink being a problem.

If anyone has any experience of this, I’d be very grateful to hear from you!
