Not sure why I'm posting this, I just feel a bit odd, almost guilty.

We went out to celebrate my birthday party this evening and took my daughters and their boyfriends along. Two bites into the meal and the daughters boyfriend was in trouble, he was bright red, stood up and was having trouble breathing.

I did what anyone would do for a moment, I looked around and waited for a trained medical professional to jump up from their meal and assist. Next thing is my daughter saying "Dad, do something". Oh st, it's down to me then...

To cut a long story short I eventually managed to get a large lump of unchewed steak fat up after a good few goes with a Heimlich. I think I might have broken him a bit (whoops) never having been trained but the main thing is he could breathe again.

He's down the hospital being checked over now as there was a fair bit of blood coming up, although that seemed to be happening just from him coughing.

I know I did the right things because he's alive and if I did break his ribs or sternum he'll heal but that responsibility for someone else's kid (he's 16) weighs pretty heavy when you're the one who invited him along.

Ignore me, like I said, it just feels pretty odd.

Top job. Another reason basic life support should be taught in schools. I hope you have celebrated with a beer.

Put you in the daughters good books for probably ever, and a top way of doing so as well.

And happy birthday!

Now that you have proved that you can break the boy he will be on his best behaviour around you for ever more. hehe

He's not proper broken, turns out the bleeding was from the obstruction and he'll just be sore for a few days.

One tip I've picked up is Coke opens up the airways, it's the ideal post incident drink if anyone is ever in this situation.

And yes, none of them will mess with me now hehe

Well done.

Still can't see why this isn't being taught in schools.

I don’t know why I am writing this either but here goes.

On a visit to St Omer France I too was eating a steak in a restaurant, when a bit got stuck in my throat, as above.

I don’t know why but I rushed out side and stood in the street, my air way then blocked completely.

I was waving my arms about in complete panic.(Yes just like a girl)

A chap in a parked Car jumped out and gave me the Heimlich manoeuvre.

It worked so well I gobed the steak out on to the bonnet of his car, followed by projectile vomit.

He definitely saved my life and that’s how I thanked him.

This is the restaurant very good other than the killer steak.

Well done OP.

The Red Cross bloke covered this on the Chris Evans show last week and it was really helpful, especially the bit about how to deal with babies and really small children choking.

I'm going to be a parent for the first time in 9 weeks and stuff like that scares the cr@p out of me so its good stuff to know.

AIUI, Heimlich is the last option as you can damage organs. Your first choice should be a few very firm slaps on the back. Still, he's alive and well so I'll let you off. biggrin

Yeah, tried slaps etc, it was this or nothing as it was firmly wedged!!

I think it must have subconsciously registered while I was listening to the Chris Evans thing smile

Taught both of my daughters how to do it properly (read better than I did last night) this morning. They said they aren't strong enough but I told them it's easy enough to show someone big to do it if they can't manage.

One minute and twenty three seconds well spent IMO.

I hope you took a moment to stick a big finger in his face saying " You ever mess my daughter around..."

These opportunities don't come around every day!

I am a Paramedic, and just wanted to say well done for stepping up to the plate.

The vast majority of people will either 1/ do nothing or 2/ call 999 and then do nothing. I have no doubt you saved his life.

I wish everyone learns basic first aid: choking and CPR. The time NOT to learn it is when your loved one is dying on the floor and a 999 call taker is trying to talk you through what to do....

Thank you. It doesn't make sense to me do nothing, never has and never will. You've not got long in this situation, you might as well give it your best shot if there's no one better able in the vicinity smile

Besides, you can't invite someone to dinner and then let them die, that would be the height of bad form.

Excellent stuff.

I had a complete blockage of my airway a few years back and no one had a clue what to do. In the end I had to heimlich myself on the corner of the dining table.

A very good skill to know, along with CPR.
