Hello

I have been suffering from some kind of pulled muscle or trapped nerve condition on the left hand said of my lower back and it's extremely painful . I have been trying to keep as mobile as possible by at least walking for a few miles each day, and taking ibuprofen. Am I making it worse or better? I will be seeing the proper Doctor next week but would love a pain free day before then.

probably worth having a chat with a physio.

If it's a trapped nerve you could try hanging (by your arms) from your loft hatch! This should stretch the spine enough for the nerve to untrap, although it still might take a few days after for it to start feeling better.

Rather than treat the pain, how about the cause?
Do you know or remember how or when it started? What you were doing?

Instead of walking have you tried a gentle swim?

It has helped me to ease the pain when I had lower backpain.

Mine was caused by pulling heavy ropes as part of my last job plus a hernia.

I did the same thing a few weeks ago. Shovelling snow, heard a pop, and could barely stand. Doctor couldn't see me for several days, so I was advised to go to ER. They diagnosed a herniated disc that caused a pinched nerve. I was advised to ice it, heat treat it (I put Epsom salts in a hot bath as well as used heat pads), and to rest. I was given oxycodone/acetaminophen (Percocet) to take for the pain.

Doc said to go to physio if there was no improvement after a few days. I'm 60kms from a physio clinic, so didn't bother, but the treatment slowly took effect. It was a full 2 weeks before things felt back to normal. Still get the odd little twinge, but it's close to 100% now.

Good luck with it, I know how debilitating it is.

Ibuprofen is good but do heed the warnings not to take it on a totally empty stomach. Swim or even just a long relaxing bath or shower can also help a fair bit - in particular if you can find time, long hot bath and then let yourself cool down gradually staying nice and relaxed, can sometimes sort out some of the rib/back pain I've had.

Is it definitely your back and not eg a kidney?

Wife had a slipped disc. The advice from many medical professionals was: DO NOT GO SWIMMING.

Horses for course, an all that - depends on what's wrong, but be careful.

You should try to keep mobile, the advice from my doc is lay down in bed and when I'm bored of that go for a walk, don't sit as it'll make it worse.

I did mine putting air in the tyre, jesus it hurts however I have ibuprofen, valium and tramadol which seems to work as the unicorn sitting next to me can confirm.

Just waiting for an MRI scan now.

Co-codamol is the only thing that works for me but I try to take them only when I absolutely have to.

Why anybody would want to take class A drugs when you can get tramadol is beyond me......only ever took 1 and never again. silly

Lot's of people suffer with lower backpain unfortunately.

Most of the time in my case the pain was gone after a few days rest.I take Solpadol.
