Fillings - Private vs NHS?

So at the age of 29 I've been told that I finally need three small fillings.

The dentist I saw today was private as I wanted a fast appointment for a checkup due to a bit of a toothache kicking in. This checkup is covered by my Simply Health plan.

The fillings he said he would provide are the white type, and at a cost of £85 for one, and £120 each for the other two.

I've booked in to get one done next week, but have just discovered that I can easily get registered with an NHS dentist locally, and presumably it's then just the £49 band 2 charge to pay.

So, given that it's my teeth, and that I'll have the fillings forever, I'm keen to get the best ones.

In people's experience, is it better to pay the money and get them done privately, or are the NHS ones just as good now?

You won't get white fillings on the NHS unless it's front teeth. The silver fillings they do are the same as private fillings, often done by the same dentist in fact.

However private dentists are miles better than nhs.

Well I only get one set of teeth (assuming stem cell research doesn't make a massive advance before next week) so will just stick with private then, thanks guys

There isn't a £75 fee on the NHS banding system - these must have been done on a private basis

As suggested private is not better, they can just charge you more for the same service!

Ah was 15 checkup and 60 for st filling of which I need to wait 10 days to fix

If you can afford it look into cermic inlays/onlays

better than a filling but will set you back a few hundred - you might be able to find a dentist who will do 3 for less money if done at once.

Hi all, got the R6 MOT'd yesterday, mileage 3900, the mileage from the previous year was also on there, 5100! I remember the bike had inadvertently been set to kilometres rather than miles when picking it up last year, so the MOT tester must have thought it was in miles. Is there any way I can have this corrected? I do have the service history which shows the lower mileage from the previous year.

On the subject of dentists, some like to create work for themselves.

Went a a new NHS/private on down in Crawley, he said I needed 2 hygiene visits @ £40 odd and then 5 fillings at £70 odd. I was horrified as I look after my teeth & never had problems at all. He refused to hand over the x-rays for a second opinion, but went to a friends parents all the same. They couldn't X-ray me (the dosage of radiation) but had a good look and said there wasn't anything wrong, just needed a good clean. They did a proper clean for me and total charge of £60. 4 years later - no issues!

BEWARE, they are scam artists some of them!

What are you basing this on? I know 3 dentists and all take on both private and NHS patients. It's like saying private doctors are better than NHS - most work in NHS hospitals.
