Afternoon all

Set the scene, I'm a 32 year old 6ft rather corpulent rugby prop forward who drives at weekends a 5.7 litre camaro and listens to Metallica and Rammstein on occasion.

I'm married to a girl 10 years my junior and is a fitness freak, definately punching above my weight in all aspects there.

I have a good paid job and speak to high end decision makers daily, my firm puts a lot of trust in me and responsibilities are high.

I like to think in my own little way I'm winning with the normally accepted yardsticks.

Prepare for this onslaught of narcissism to be crushed!

I am petrified of spiders.

The mere thought of one nearby makes my hair (of which there is none on top) stand on end, I get the sweats and become very defensive. Friends have found out the hard way that threatening me with one (real, plastic or nonexistent under clasped hands) often results in a violent defence mechanism.

I had to go out on a nightshift on Tuesday night with a new operations guy, visiting derelict and dingy properties.

Constantly on edge, affected my mood, didnt see any but was embarrassing entering each room hunched over!

My question is has anyone with arachnophobia found a good way of mitigating it to a manageable level or killed it alltogether? Missus suggests this type of thing at a zoo: https://www.zsl.org/zsl-london-zoo/whats-on/friend...

...but I doubt I'd even be able to make it through the door.

Any advice or success stories?

Cheers

I find the use of fire.....and lots of it helps.

Damn pesky eight legged monsters have no place on this earth!

Years ago I was in Chessington Zoo when they brought out the birds of prey, I was singled out to have an eagle perched on my wrist and leapt at the chance, awesome animals.

I was still stood there with Eddie on my arm when the spider guy came over and offered to put something far too big and with far too many legs on my other arm. The look of horror on the bird handlers face as I tried to run away with his pride and joy on my arm was matched only by the girly scream of terror emanating from my lungs.

Last night, I switched on the hall light and caught a massive house spider tip toeing across the floor. It stopped dead in its tracks so I was able to pick it up, open the front door, and deftly lob the b*gger about 20ft into a hedge. It was about this size

I decided to tackle it myself, and started picking up spiders and letting them run around in my hands. Started with the little 'uns and worked up.

I'm still not a fan, and I would still hesitate before picking up the bigger house spiders / cardinals (and avoid if possible) etc but I'm a lot less bothered than I used to be.

Nice to know there are others on here (aware it affects 6% of us globally!).

Agreed, fire works. That and calling the missus (serious man point loss).

Wish I could just switch off the irrational part of my brain sometimes.

Should have forseen this kind of response. Har de har. smile What a horrid creature. Needs to be set alight and watched burn to a pile of ash, then driven to the North sea and scattered.

Spiders don't bother me so much, but if anyone remembers that spider from "krull", it gave me sleepless nights as a kid.

Hats off. I had to look up "cardinal" and as a result now have a euphemism for Cardinal Wooolsey that I never knew I had.

I honestly think my heart would stop beating if one was allowed to crawl over my hands. Have a recurring nightmare where I am bitten by one, paralysed as a result and then have to endure it slowly walking up my body and across my face.

Not a fun subconscious experience.

Speaking of which I have spider scarers in mine (and the garage and the upstairs rooms and the kitchen) which seem to work. Read somewhere they scare off all but the larger ones.

Expecting to encounter one behind my tool chest one Saturday afternoon, lounging up against the scarer thing with a "bring it" look.

Spiders can walk 20 feet no problem. They can also land from being thrown 20 feet with no damage. Rather than removing your spider problem you've turned yourself in to a spider theme park with free food and exciting rides.

Wouldn't have thought it a major issue. Unless Alfa Spider's are common around your way?

Take revenge with ...............Spider Salad !

Steam your spiders live, as this is a safe method of both asphyxiating them and keeping them crisp and fresh. You'll want to chop the legs off the larger spiders and quarter them. Prepare a bed of romaine lettuce, parsley, Portobello mushrooms in season (chopped), radishes, and scallions. Toss in approximately 1 cup chopped spiders, much as you would in a seafood salad, then a generous amount of olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, and fresh ground pepper . Enjoy .
