Protein shakes? Do they really work?
Discussion
im a novice when it comes to all things exercise, ive been trying to shift my belly and get a good bit of definition in my arms and chest, and legs, nothing massive. in addition to a good diet low in processed foods etc
ive been looking at maximuscle lean definition, does this stuff really aid to help in fat loss? the reviews on amazon and other sites are pretty mixed, some say good plenty of exercise, some say pointless.
i dont drink, eat that much bread etc, so would like to start seeing some gains.

Protein shakes are just, well, protein.
Useful if you're trying to supplement the protein you get from your normal diet (say to build or preserve muscle) but they don't actually do anything to make you fitter, thinner, bigger or whatever.
Think about it this way, it's little different from eating a chicken breast or two.

I'm sure some giant beefcake will be along soon to disagree with me, but I'm usually of the opinion that if you're aiming for the protein shakes, you're doing it wrong.
So many people reach for these things as the first step towards 'getting fit'.
It's b

How can a source of protein be bSo many people reach for these things as the first step towards 'getting fit'.

ks? No one claims it to be some sort of miracle, it's just protein...SuperDude said:

I agree and disagree with your statement

I agree with people instantly think they need protein shakes to get fit or what ever but I put this down to a marketing ploy. And it works.
I personally take protein shakes for a couple of reasons:
-I aim for 3-400g protein a day (155kg bodyweight strongman)
-the cost in comparison to food is so much cheaper
-the ease of having one to use in between meals is great
-there's nothing wrong with taking one post workout

They are useful if your diet doens't give you enogh protain. For example if you are a vegetarian you might find your protain intake is on the low side, and supplementing with a shake a day should help. However if you're eating meat 3 times a day its not going to help unless you are the aforementioned 155kg monster.

If you don't mind me asking, which do you use, Smiffy?
Sorry didn't see this, currently I'm using muscleforce supplements own brand protein. I've known the guy a few years and says his contains very little soya in. I've taken a gamble with it and paid about £100 for 13kg worth (was on offer at the time). It's hard to find a decent supplement that isn't more than £12 per kg (what I'm willing to pay)
by the way nutrisport is under investigation for lying about what quantities of soya (I think) is actually in it.
I'm sure it works for some…..
Here's my experience of taking protein supplements:
In my 20s, I would take it regularly but always be around 17% BF with decent build.
In my 30s, I take ZERO SUPPLEMENTS but trained smarter and in the best shape of my life at 6% BF with a ripped physique like Hugh Jackman in X-Men. I just eat normal food.

Do you not think you would be in the same shape if you took supplements and trained smart? Here's my experience of taking protein supplements:
