Ruptured my achillies tendon where it joins the calf muscle.

Anyone got any good news stories with regards to recovery that might cheer me up?

Currently wearing a 'boot' with wedges for the next 8 weeks.

Evening John, sorry to hear this fella.

I'm currently 5 weeks in to mine. Clean snap just above the left heel. I was fortunate if you can call it that because my 'gap' was quite small when the toes were pointed down.

My timeline was plaster cast on the same day in A&E. That was a Saturday. I had an ultrasound scan on the Wednesday and saw a specialist in a fracture clinic on the Thursday. It was properly recast on that Thursday in what they call the Equinus (?) position. This is toes pointing down. The following Saturday, I was scheduled for surgery to re attach.

A different consultant re-reviewed my scan and advised that because of the gap, I'd heal equally as quickly by just staying in the cast. Fair enough. He described the operation as being similar to stitching 2 shaving brushes together.

Surgery depends (in some hospitals) on the gap distance between the split.

So after 3 weeks in plaster, and a second visit to the fracture clinic, I moved into the plastic boot with 4 wedges in the heel. Remove 1 wedge a week and have a 5th week with no wedges, gently stretching the tendon and bringing the foot back to 90 degrees.

Currently now have 2 wedges in the boot and another comes out on Monday morning. First Physio on Tuesday.

All told, I'm told the recovery is complete in 6 -9 months.

Good luck fella, get some gel pads for the crutch handles. You'll need them.

My son (12) ruptured his playing footie a few months back. No sign of it getting better any time soon I'm afraid.

TX.

Snapped my left achilles whilst skiing on 16 April. Had in put in plaster in Andorra, saw a surgeon back in the UK a week later and had another cast to ensure foot was pointing down. Operation a week later. Two weeks in a cast with no weight bearing, and now for the last week I've been in an AirCast boot with three heel wedges. Total of six weeks in AirCast before I can go back to shoes, with one wedge removed every two weeks.
