How to find a top knee surgeon?

Hi all,
I've been suffering with a knee problem for 2 years now. I've had a couple of MRI's and spoken to a couple of specialist whilst I was living in Oz (1 year ago) - they basically couldn't see anything on the scan and recommend I keep building up as much muscle around the joint and slowly build up my usage. Well a year later and I got to the point where I could walk the dog most days and do about 30 mins on a cross trainer 3 times a week without it killing me. However a recently have had a newborn 5 weeks ago, and I went for a walk 3 weeks ago with him strapped to me. Since then my knees back to square one and tonight I had trouble getting around the supermarket. I did see the NHS when I got back about 3 months ago, and they basically said they couldn't see anything and won't want to do anything.
However at 42 I don't want my active life to be over (I don't think I could actually live) and I want to be able to play with my boy as he grows up - pick him up , carry him, and go for bike rides. So I'm wanting to find someone who might have an idea of whats happening (it all started very suddenly) as basically to date know one knows/can guess.
How could I go about finding someone - I'm ok to pay, but depending on price I don't know if I can afford to pay for private surgery - though the way things are going I might have to (sell car/house) to live me life.
Would appreciate any pointers on how to find someone good

I think you need to find out what is wrong with your knee and find a specialist or sub-specialist who deals with your exact problem. That may require further MRI and investigative arthroscopy. It think privately a MRI can be had for £250-500, the operation is circa £2.5-3k (that's doing nothing just a look around) from memory.
My experience of the NHS is if its very bad and effecting your quality of life they will deal with it quicker than if you can simply cope.

Thanks. The problem is no one can figure out what the problem is - thats the problem! Hence why I'm trying to find someone who is good a figuring out problems (vs the actual surgery if needed). 3K is doable definitely - I'd happy pay that to have my life back.My experience of the NHS is if its very bad and effecting your quality of life they will deal with it quicker than if you can simply cope.
The Fortius Clinic is apparently the best place in the country for Orthopaedic Specialists http://www.fortiusclinic.com
I am actually writing this from my hospital bed having just had shoulder surgery with one of the Fortius elbow/shoulder specialists. They generally tend to work at two or three places privately as well as having an NHS Clinic, for instance the chap I am seeing works at Fortius, London Bridge and St John and St Elizabeth as well as Guys for his NHs stuff. One of the knee clinics above is at the John's and Lizzie's so that guy may well be be a Fortius bloke too. I was sent to Fortius by an osteopath who has worked on among other Usain Bolt...told me it's the best place you can go. If you have a complicated issue the advantage of going to somewhere like Fortius is that is the consultant you see needs a second opinion he'll speak to a colleague...it's one of the reasons they work together at places like that.
If you want I am more than happy to ask my consultant who he reckons is the best knee specialistI can also check with the physio's as I am doing that at John's and Lizzie's so they may have an opinion!

thanks for this - yes please do - someone who is good at figuring out issues (nothing comes up on the MFI, bone scan, or xray)

Googling for "Michael Owen knee surgery" suggests Dr Richard Steadman did his, another search shows Ruud van Nistelroy had his done by the same chap. Both were quite serious anterior cruciate ligament injuries and they would have gone to the best available.http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/europe/77...
Seems like he has just retired, but his clinic may be a good starting point.
