It feels weird writing this on a forum but hopefully some of you have been in the same situation as me. I've read the other drinking threads on here and most people seem to have a problem with drinking regularly/everyday. I don't drink at all during the week, no beers no wine etc, the problem starts when I go out.
My social circle(from my Uni days) and my fiances are all big drinkers and whenever we go out we always drink a lot. The problem is that I used to be able to control my drinking, after 5 or 6 beers I would be feeling good and would not drink anymore that night. However recently I have noticed that I can't stop and say no, so I have the aforementioned 5 or 6 beers someone offers me a shot and it goes downhill from there. Thankfully I don't pass out or vomit or get aggressive but sometimes I say things I shouldn't and have noticed that I have memory loss nearly every time I go out which makes me feel like a drunk the next day. It's usually shots that tip me over the edge so I plan on cutting those out but I'm worried that won't be enough.
The big problem is that 95% of my social life is somehow or other connected to drinking, even when we go sailing, skiing, canoeing whatever it always ends with a piss up in the evenings. Anyone been in a similar situation?

You just sound like a normal young man having a normal weekend. I'd be more worried if/when the weekend activities stay as they are ( or even calm down a bit ) but you find yourself having a bottle of wine or 3-4 pints most week nights as well.

As above really.

I'm 27 and enjoy a drink at the weekend. I've always been the same though, once I break the 4 pint barrier then it's 'st or bust' for me.

I wouldn't worry about it, it's fairly common with most people. It's when you get older and start getting 'super hangovers' that you begin to calm down and modify your drinking.

Getting blackout drunk every weekend probably isn't the best thing though. I get pretty drunk, but rarely do I forget large portions of the night (these days at least). The problem is that while you might actively try to control it, once you have a few drinks everyhting goes out the window.

How old are you OP? You'll probably find you just grow out of it.

I'm 29, I know it's a "normal" weekend but it's the lack of self control which worries me as I used to be able to exercise it. As soon as I drink a couple of beers I seem to hoover down drinks quicker and quicker until I get really drunk although as I mentioned before I don't pass out, can still walk and talk etc it's the 1-2 hour holes in my memory that worry me. As far as hangovers go, this is starting to take a heavier toll than it used to and I end up recovering most of Saturday and Sunday and don't do anything productive.

I'd be more concerned about the multiple fiances, one wife is bad enough.

The above posters might say it's ok and normal but I completely disagree - maybe it's popular amongst your crowd of friends but I only know 2 people who possibly get that bad where they forget everything.

Try just drinking less. You don't need to drink that much to have fun. (Well, you don't need to drink anything to have fun.)

hehe

I'm getting a bit sick of people using autothing to communicate electronically. I had a bizarre email earlier. It's harder to read quickly. I mean it's like me igloo whelks randomly into scythes.

I'm going to autocorrect my spoken language when I speak to people with iPhones.

Google 'Hello Sunday Morning', sign up, do a 3m reset. If you are out with your mates offering to be the designated driver should soon stop the p*ss taking.

Record that on a tape and leave it on a loop while you sleep, you'll be cured in no time.

Wouldn't consider that anything to worry about to be honest. In my late teens and early 20s I would regularly end up back home wondering WTF happened and it was mostly the same for the people I was drinking with. I had Uni, rugby and work circles which usually involved easily over 6 pints at home or at the club before heading out.

Different drinks affect you in different ways and the worst was when I used to drink a bottle of red before going out. sometimes I would pull the cork then be magically transported to my bed with a bad head, no money and no recollection of the past 10 hours. I wouldn't drink midweek or act a prick while drunk either.

These days I've a wife plus a small child so I've grown out of it. I also grew to detest feeling the effects of a hangover for two days. The lads I work with who are younger or reliving their youth are the same as I was so I'm the miserable old git.

I think it was Frankie Boyle who said before binge drinking just used to be called "drinking".

I'm the same. I don't drink that often but when I do I really go for it, sometimes for up to 3 days...

It's good being young, enjoy!

i think its pretty sad that someone comes on here and says "i am worried about my drinking" and just gets told "nahhh, its fine"

clearly, if the OP thinks its not..its not.

this country has a huge issue with drink, attitudes like the ones shown here are probably why

Oh have a drink and lighten up. He'll be married soon and the only time he'll be up until 3am and suffering memory loss and feeling terribe the next morning will because the baby had cholic and was crying all night.

Take it upon yourself to take the OP to AA and pat his head whilst he cries in to his hands then?

FFS he stated he doesn't touch it during the week, It's hardly a drink problem if all he does is occasionally get pissed and say a few things he regrets.

I don't know why pints of whiskey will be better than shots, but you're the boss.

I'm not sure why the memory loss/'blackout' thing is such an issue. Everyone reacts differently to booze anyway. I've lost periods of time during a session since I started drinking in my late teens but I've never done anything during that period so outrageous that I've been arrested or shunned by my peers so I'm not that bothered.

I agree with the priggish-sounding poster above that our general attitudes to excessive alcohol intake is too blasé for our own good, but that's unlikely to be changed by a forum thread here, is it?
