Discussion
Hoping for a bit of advice on this,
I am constantly buggering up my knees from Skiing, I damaged my left knee ACL a few years ago and this caused a meniscus injury in my right knee, which got sorted, 2 trips this year have finished off my left knee and I went in to have the meniscus corrected about 10 days ago. The op went fine (I think) and I got this letter from my consultant (Sean O'Leary) the other day. Just wanted a translation of what it means -
James underwent his left knee arthoscopy at Circle Reading today. Under anaesthesia he had a strongly positive Lachmans test in keeping with an ACL rupture. This was confirmed at arthoscopy. In addition he had a significantly unstable tag-tear of the medial meniscus, which was resected to leave a stable rim. The rest of his knee was in good shape. I will discuss the further management of his knee when I see him in six weeks, especially in regard to the ACL rupture.
Secondly, I am worried I have done something silly. Didn't have any pain with this or my other op, and walking pretty well from day one. So this morning I went out on my mountain bike and took the normal route (half on road half off road) that I do each morning. It is about 5KM and half way through my knee started clicking and got a bit painful. Now it has got a huge bruise around the area where the athroscopy was. Should I be worried?

have you ever had surgery to repair the ACL?
if not then he's noticed the tear and is recommending corrective surgery.
Your cartilage (meniscus) was in a bad state so he's cut away the bad parts, possibly all of the affected area.
He is going to talk to you in 6 weeks about the state of your knee, and what he thinks you should and shouldn't be doing to it to make things worse/maintain a healthy knee.
Probably shouldn't have gone out on the bike. the clicking sound could have been any more cartridge being crunched away. or your ligaments rubbing against the now exposed areas of bone in the knee. Depending on the state of your ACL tear it could be that trapping between your Tibia and Femur bones. Rest the knee. plenty of ice and heat treatment. use the anti-inflammatory they should have prescribed you. and listen to them next time they tell you (or should have) to stay off impact activities for a period. the road cicling wouldnt have been so bad, assuming the off road stuff was trails of varying cambers/bumps?
I got told to avoid any impact exercise until I'd been back to my consultant after a recent calf operation. which basically left swimming for rehab.
This is all just what I make of having received similar letters off Consultants for almost exactly the same issues with my left knee.
Partially blew my ACL at 16 and ruptured all my Cartilage in the knee joint. resulting in removal of almost all Cartilage in the knee. Nothing done about the ACL as it was deemed unnecessary at the time. Although I'm pretty sure its fully gone sometime in the last 16years. my knee is unstable as hell. and it gives way far too often! (sometimes making interesting situations in ASDA & Matalan stores who assume I've slipped on something in store
