My new employer wants to know my blood group and also wants a certificate to prove it.

I cannot give blood due to the nature of my Job, any ideas? The gp surgery won't do it either.

WTF! Why do they need to know this?
If you need blood any decent hospital would take a cross match sample even with a known blood type

Is this in the UK?

Is there any reason why you couldn't give blood? If not, you can go along to your local centre and they'll tell you for free (and give you biscuits). They do want something in return though...

I'm a pilot and require a number of days off before flying again after giving blood.

My new employer is in the Middle East and they need to know. I don't know why.

After giving blood is understandable, but a blood test is just a little prick(fnar) Surely the GP is OK with that

I'm a pilot too.

Giving blood isn't the same as having a blood test. See your GP.

I called the gp earlier today and was told the only way I could find my blood group was to become a blood donor. Eventually called them back and was told to book a private appointment at the hospital.

I can only think of nefarious reasons as to why a third party would want to know, starting with compiling a database for when one of their royal family needs a liver transplant, through cloning you to providing prey to a pack of alien vampire chihuahua hybrids living in a remote desert compound

But pragmatically you seem to have found a way to tick the box so youre sorted

Its still weird though smile

When I was in and out of the Middle East and India for a British Company, many years ago, they wanted blood group so they could supply blood to the hospital if it was needed, they also supplied needles, scalples etc, as they didn't trust the local hospitals.

Very strange that your new employer did not require you to have a full medical anyway, which would require a blood test. I would expect a full medical to be a requirement for a job as a pilot. If you need residence anywhere in the middle east you will need a medical anyhow. Just seems odd.

Assume the medical would be part of his UK ATPL?

Of course it is. However most gulf airlines also insist on carrying out their own medical and won't employ anyone without a clean medical history.

Glad you got it sorted, I thought it might come down to money.

Enjoy the desert!
