Private Dental Charges

I had 2 fillings yesterday and was charged £289 after an estimate of £238. I'm on a plan paying £17 a month and am wondering should I be paying so much and how I benefit from this plan. It does entitle me to an exam and hygienist every 6 months. Any thoughts anyone?

I don't know the answer but know exactly what you mean. I've been paying a monthly direct debit for years, yet whenever I have treatment it seems to cost a fortune. The dentist I've been using for a long time recently emigrated, so I took the opportunity to scrap my dental insurance and try a new dentist. I bet I don't end up paying any more money overall for treatment.

You pay £17 a month for a check-up and visit to the hygienist every 6 months, treatment you could have for about £38 on the NHS. The fillings would have been under £50 as well, maybe £100 for white ones. Is that really all you get?

Just got a phone call today saying mines going up to £13, for exactly what you get. I have been going to this dentist for the last 15 years though so hard to know if yours is a good price or not.

Well, I've been going to this practice since I was 12. I'm 53 now. The Dentist retired and sold the business to the new one who is good btw. But I'm wondering if she's doing unnecessary work to get more cash out of me ( especially when I roll up in my 911). On the other hand however there's absolutely no pain or discomfort.

Having been in the Army for the past 20 odd years I took Dental treatment for granted. Now I am back in the civilian world I admit to being confused about NHS vs private treatment.

I signed up to an NHS dentist last year and have had some trouble with a molar that needs some treatment, the Dentist just basically shrugged his shoulders as if to say 'not my problem mate'. I am guessing that the NHS is only there to fill cavities, extract and nothing more?

NHS Dentists will cover almost all treatments as far as I'm aware but the charges are capped. So for an inspection you pay £17, for band 2 work you pay £50, and for band 3 work you pay a maximum of £220
