On & off since about 2010 I’ve had a lump appear in my right armpit, initially it was once a year in February – I tootled off to the Dr, and then the Hospital, had it checked & was told all is fine; it’s just a fatty lump.

However, it came back in February and hasn’t gone. And now it hurts, and is VERY noticeable; as in my whole armpit is visibly swollen under a t-shirt.

I have a Dr’s appointment booked for Saturday (earliest I can get in as I work away from home) but would be grateful for some reassurance as I’m freaking out at the moment frown

Sounds like a cyst, I had a small one on my head for years which suddenly trebled in size, if something swells under the skin it will be sore, I predict nothing to worry about. I also had an infected boil on my chest which was unbelievably painful, couldn't do up a shirt or wear a seatbelt! When I eventually went to the doctor he swore and asked why I hadn't come sooner.

I've had a cyst 'removed' not nice! frown

I've got myself so worked up, I can't concentrate - I've run the local Walk In Centre to find their opening hours & they aren't a Walk In Centre! They are appointment only (which I guess is better for waiting times!) I'm in at 8am tomorrow.

I had something very similar when I was 20. It was swollen lymph nodes. All the symptoms pointed to breast cancer (which is rare in males)but it turned out to be cat scratch fever which the doctors thought I had contracted out in Bosnia.

I wouldn't worry too much about it - it's far too easy to get yourself worked up into a state. Fingers crossed though.

DON'T worry - until you're told it's something to worry about (and you probably won't be)! You're doing the right thing in getting it looked at. At this stage you can do nothing more and see that as a positive step. Don't waste any more mental energy on it. Easy to say I know but it's the best way!

Thanks guys

I know & I'm normally quite calm & level headed about it - it's been there since February! But....

Probably a cyst - I used to get the odd one when I was a bit younger - quite sore as well.

If it hurts to touch it you're fine its not the C word! If you have enlarged Lymph nodes as I did you have a painless, smooth moveable lump and it probably wouldnt go up and down it would be up all the time.

It came back up on 20/10 and was still up on 7/11, so the Doctor has referred me to Plastics to see about getting it removed.

I'm reminded of the Barron Knights changing a Hot Chocolate song into a lament sung by the Hunchback of Notre Dame...

Wishing you well Ali. Knowing what you have been through it's understandably a worry.

Worrying is about as much use as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum.

It will be fine smile

Another one who's had a cyst/abcess on their armpit!

If I remember rightly I had it drained then antibiotics and it cleared up fairly quickly! Worst bit was pulling the plaster off, free wax!!

It was a more pleasant experience than when I had a pilonidal abcess removed put it that way!

The more diffuse swelling sound like boil.

They can hurt like hell until you can get drainage, and a lot of stuff comes out.
However, you will often get a few more, not always in that site. Antibiotics will help and prevent cellulits, sometimes you need medicated body wash to clear specific bacteria
