Cut my finger. Now worried.

So, I buggered my finger up a bit about a month ago. Doctor told me to keep it dry, so I did - perhaps a bit too dry as the glue strips refused to come off voluntarily despite being told the contrary.
Anyway, long story short, I took them off today and though it scrubs up alright given the circumstances I'm a bit paranoid (some would call it nervous
) about nerve endings. As you may or may not see from the picture I cut it from the bottom up, and the top of my finger is now very numb indeed. I'm hoping it's just an extra layer of skin numbing the senses, but I have a bad feeling about it.
So, the question I'd like to pose to the experts of PH, can nerve endings 'grow back' or regain at least some of their original capacity?
Or perhaps even better, how likely am I to have damaged them in the first place? I realise it might be a bit of a silly question, but then again I'm not very anatomically or medically well versed so why not.

I did something very similar to a finger about 20 years ago. I was delivering newspapers and one door had a very sharp letterbox with a strong spring. I cried a bit (I was only 13).
Anyway, the section of finger was numb for about 6 months or so, and a bit dull for a couple of years after that. It's absolutely fine now, except when I hurt the finger that the damage is on the pain gets referred all around the finger in lots of strange ways.

The strange pains sound interesting however. A bit like phantom itches?
