I'd like to get a fitness watch for my wife as she does a lot of walking, mainly with our dog, and it'd be nice for her track exactly how far she goes. It'd be nice if it could sync with an app on her Samsung tablet, but she only has a basic phone, so it doesn't need the fuctionality to have a bluetooth connection for phone calls and texts. Are there any good ones out there?

I would advise holding off for awhile, there will be tremendous advances in this market in the next few months. Apple are expected to announce their watch soon (maybe tomorrow) and even if that has no interest for you, when Apple makes its move on a market all the competitors usually immediately re-evaluate their product line.

I have an interest in this sort of technology but personally I believe that a stopwatch is all you ever need.

She doesn't time her walks, she just wants to track the distance.

A smart phone would probably be cheaper and easier to use IMO.

There are plenty of sports watches out there but you want gps which means more money + a bit ugly on the wrist.

A smart phone will do exactly what you're after whilst sitting in her pocket.

Download it to what? Her tablet is a bit big to take out walking with her.

The basic Garmin Forerunner 10 is this one:

That's GPS tracking & sync via USB, though I've no idea about sync via Samsung.

The heart rate monitor version is the 110, and I doubt there is an end to the list of features the tri folk have got on theirs. More and more money, obviously.

Everyone at work all use suunto watches, pricey but very good watches and there's a watch for just about anything you can think of. At some point I will get one myself.

Nice, but could be overkill just for walking.

The Fitbit Flex looks interesting. Anyone had any experience?

Have a look at the motorola Moto G smartphone,

The gps watches are over priced and their is no such thing as a smartwatch at the moment.
