Memory problems
Discussion
I have a bad memory - it's always been pretty bad, but it gets worse when I'm tired. However, lately it's getting worse - I have, in the past, forgotten complete conversations a few minutes after they've completed and not remembered any part of the conversation - I've given up laughing it off or backtracking as it's obvious that I can't remember stuff. I've been the doctor who couldn't or wouldn't do anything (I do have private medical cover but I'm not sure that'll make any difference).
My long term memory, however, is not so bad - apart from those things that haven't been committed to short term memory.
I have to write most things down and I'm getting to the point where I will forget even the most basic stuff - to the point where my partner can't seem to rely on me to remember stuff for the kids at school.
I get cross about it - sometimes pretty angry at myself (and at my partner who I sometimes perceive as nagging me). The thing is, it comes and goes - sometimes it's ok, sometimes I just can't remember things - there's the obvious "walk in to a room - why am I here thing" to clean forgetting that it was school photos yesterday.
So, the question is this, are there exercises that I can do to improve my memory - getting more sleep will happen, but I have a 3 year old that hasn't slept properly for, well, 3 years (add to that the tonsils/adenoids out 2 weeks ago and his desperate screaming agony in the night).
Thanks,
JTW

How old are you?
The ability to recall things reduces naturally the older you get, mainly short term stuff. I'm 47 and used to pride myself on my memory and was able to go through entire meetings without taking a single note yet recall everything accurately but lately, I find my self having to take increasing amounts of notes to record things as basic as names.
But, the process of physically writing stuff I find helps to improve what I can recall. So if I write something, I will remember it even without referring to my notes.
Unless it is causing you serious problems, I wouldn't worry too much.
As George Burns once said, the great thing about Alzhiemers is you meet new friends every day.

I'm 38 but my memory has always been sketchy but, like I said, it's getting worse - Today, in the office, I went for a long hard think (a s
t) at lunchtime after having popped out to fill the car up.
At 1630, on my way out - no car keys - It was then I remembered I'd hung them on the back of the trap's door. They weren't there...
Thankfully they'd been handed in to security, but the worrying part was that it didn't even occur to me that I went in with my keys and came out without them.

Depression, been there got the teeshirt, see your doc. No, seriously, one of the symptoms of depression is random memory loss. I thought i was going bonkers, couldnt remember names, places, anything, having now gone some way down the road of treatment its slowly improving. My long term memory, however, is not so bad - apart from those things that haven't been committed to short term memory.

It's probably worth going to see your doctor and having a few tests done.
I was talking to a nurse this morning (I was having blood tests) and she was telling me how she was having memory problems (pretty much as you described) and they had linked it to a drop in her folic acid levels.
Anyway, go see and doctor and get some proper advice. Hope it works out

I think I will - I wanted to listen to "The Chain" this morning but I just couldn't remember "Fleetwood Mac".
The thing is, I can look at most of my books (I have hundreds) and I can tell you the basic plot of that book with names, places and in the case of 3 or 4, in depth detail about the plot including how the characters look or certain phrases they've used. It's highly selective and very maddening.
I will make an appointment for Monday I think.
