I'm 43 and at least 3 stone over weight, with high cholesterol, trying to get fit enough to start cycling the 5 miles to a new job in a weeks time, I am terribly unfit. Had a little bot of chest pain, went to the doc about my foot hurting and mentioned the chest pain. Its really quite minor. I didn't think he'd do anything.

Now I'm having blood tests, ECG, aspirin and not to cycle, been referred to a chest pain clinic, doc says its most likely just muscle pain.

Not sure what to think. Feels like I've made a fuss about nothing.

Well, you're 43, at least 3 stone overweight and have high cholesterol. You're on the graph for potential heart attack

On the YBW forum, oGaryo has just done the same and is now in hospital hooked up to machines and a drip. Get it sorted out.

Wellll, tell the doctor you have two hearts so can afford to let one go.

As above, better safe than sorry. If it's a fuss over nothing then the doctor wouldn't have sent you to be checked out.

You can still lose weight without exercising. I think you can fill in the gaps for this one. Here's a clue in case you think you need to eat salads and brown rice all day: _ __.

My mum had something similar. Sounded like 'costa concordia'.

Its a sure fire way to skip the wait at A&E...women in her 40s with chest pains...pretty much seen straight away.

Yes, it was the post about oGaryo that made mention it to the doc, I wasn't going to bother.

I'm glad we've all prodded you in the right direction. biggrin

I had a little heart thingy about 3 years ago and now have to carry a small nitro spray with me. Not very fat and cycle every day, but it can still catch you out at our age.

Last week a friend of my father's died from a heart attack brought on by deep vein thrombosis from a short trip to Turkey. Only 50, very sad.

I'm sure your loved ones would rather you felt a bit daft than doing nothing about it on the off chance it's something more serious. You did the right thing.

When you get the all clear, ge tback on your bike and stop wasting the doctors time hehe

Went for the blood test this morning.

Just had the ECG, nurse said nothing on the chart worried her, no reason to go running for the doctor.

Phew.

I had to take a close relative to A&E with severe chest pains a couple of weeks ago. They are now back home and fitted with stents to widen the appropriate arteries etc. Definitely not the sort of thing to avoid, so you did the right thing. I would encourage anyone who gets chest pains to get it looked at there and then, and not "leave it, see how it goes".

Its certainly brought home to me that I need to do more "proper" exercise. With a strange twist of fate, a couple of days ago I got a letter from the GP's surgery (wondered what on earth it was at first) asking if I wanted to go along for a general check-up, which they offer for all over-40s. In the normal course of events I would have passed on that, but I suspect this time I will be accepting.

I have no idea what to do for exercise, walking bores the hell out of me, and there's a lovely fragrance of diesel fumes around all the roads here now!

I have an appointment in the chest pains bit of the local cardiac unit on Tuesday morning.

We'll see what the outcome is.
