Why do I sweat so much?
Discussion
Sorry to have such a nasty thred in the morning but is there any reason why some sweat more than others?
I know all people are different but I feel I sweat more than most when at the gym. I like to think I'm not that unfit, could be fitter but hence the gym.
I walk the dog a few miles at least once a day and also cycle a couple of time a week, not far but a few miles each. But as soon as I get on a tread mill or cycle machine I sweat what feels like ltrs in the space on 10 minutes.
Thanks for the advice

Use antiperspirant?
I used to sweat a bit, swapped from Sure antiperspirant to "rockface 48 hour antiperspirant" and it's so much better.
Try some different ones out.
Anti perspirant is a really, really bad idea. Your body is trying to regulate its heat through sweating, and attempting to stop that sweating won't do anything to help your body ...I used to sweat a bit, swapped from Sure antiperspirant to "rockface 48 hour antiperspirant" and it's so much better.

Use one of those natural crystal deodorants, cheaper than anti perspirant, lasts considerably longer and arguably works better.
Some people do just sweat. It is just the way it is. I used to worry about it until I watched one of the James Cracknell documentaries. If someone at that level of fitness can "just sweat like a pig" then I'll just accept that I do sweat a fair bit, thats life. Without major surgery, it likely won't change.

The question is, do you sweat on occasions when you shouldn't? Or is it simply when exercising?
If it's only whilst you're exercising, I wouldn't worry too much.
NB: I'm not a GP but I am suffering from excessive sweating and am due a CT scan!
Your worrying me now, mine is both...If it's only whilst you're exercising, I wouldn't worry too much.

Very unfit people sweat a lot, but then some of the heaviest sweaters I've known have been very with with low body fat. One of my mates at Uni named Dave "feel my pecs" Haynes was a national standard triathlete and dripped sweat at the slightest sign of exertion. He was early 20s.I know all people are different but I feel I sweat more than most when at the gym. I like to think I'm not that unfit, could be fitter but hence the gym.

Age also plays a part. I sweat way more than I did in my 20s and 30s.
Sweating can also be hormonal. If you've not always been a sweater see your GP.
Lots of people sweat heavily when they embark on a fitness routine. Do you smoke? Drink? Carry excess weight? Wear the right clothes? Eat too much before exercise? Weight training or stationary gossip corner (bike) won't really get you fit in any way that affects your cardiovascular system, you need to run properly.
I'm probably fitter than I've ever been, and I sweat way more than I used to! I think that might be down to better hydration (ie, I drink more water therefore there is more to come out) and also my body getting better at trying to regulate my core temperature.
I went running last night in temp of about 8 deg and the sweat was dripping off my nose after about 3 miles.

Your body doesn't improve at regulating core temperature - it either does the job correctly or doesn't. My guess is there's a correlation between the amount you sweat and your increased fitness levels, i.e. you're running faster or more intensely because you're fitter and so you sweat more!I went running last night in temp of about 8 deg and the sweat was dripping off my nose after about 3 miles.
While there's no doubt some of us sweat more than others the mechanism (hypothalmus) for cooling the blood and internal organs/brain to safe levels doesn't monitor fitness levels it just tries to keeps the body in homeostasis based on skin and blood temperature, i.e. you're hot you sweat, you're cold you shiver. The main difference is when you're fit you generally carry less weight so the heart doesn't have to work so hard which equals less effort which means less sweat.

I don't drink alcohol, smoke or tend to eat before I exercise and think I wear the right kind of stuff (rugby shorts and cotton tee shirt) When on the bike machines I tend to try and keep to about 95rpm on the random setting, around 8km/h on the runner and a few weight machines. Thanks all glad its not just me

That's a naturally occurring antiperspirant so not really any better than just spraying on a normal antiperspirant...Flibble said:

I was bad at sweating, this helps massively and its got the added bonus of not turning the shirts yellow as there is no aluminium in it.
