Spinning class, what to expect?
Discussion
Being the new year and new me etc etc I am upping.my fitness level.
I have booked myself into a spinning class at the gym next Tuesday, I have heard that these are very hard work and you can burn up to 500 calories in one session.
Is all this true and are they as hard as I am expecting?
Thanks all.

Never done a full class but I've done it as a warm up for circuit training.
Anything like this is hard work. If your new to training I wouldn't go balls out at the start of the class looks and sounds easy but it's not. Go at your own pace and the main thing enjoy it. After the first one especially you will be fecked but stick at it and you will get fitter every time you go

O/T but I read somewhere that it's almost impossible to burn more than 7/8 cals a minute eg about 500 an hour? Any truth in that?
TX.
Depends on intensity. If you work really REALLY hard, then you could do 1000cals an hour. Most I've done is about 800. And I felt close to death.TX.

Thanks for the warning then all. Wasn't going to go flat out from the start. I've made that mistake on things before and realised that I wasn't fit enough.
Would be interesting on how many calories can be burnt in one session obviously person dependent though
Take it easy on your first spinning class.Would be interesting on how many calories can be burnt in one session obviously person dependent though
When the instructor says "2 turns up" that doesn't mean 2 full turns on the resistance. It is normally 2 partial turns. or a quarter of a turn.
Last couple of classes I did, I took the instructions literally. The instructor wondered why I was barely moving the pedals - the resistance was at its maximum ....
They're fun classes, definitely recommended.
Don't forget that the bikes have a fixed wheel, i.e. you cannot coast on them.
When I first went, I peaked a bit too early and went to freewheel to let my legs recover for a bit.
Turns out that when you're tired, the weight of the flywheel keeps your legs moving whether you want them to or not, and you look might look like a bit of a dick in front of all the hot girlies with your legs flailing around wildly while your arms are doing the Team America secret signal trying to stay upright.

Im addicted to them I do 3 or 4 a week Its as hard or as easy as you want to make it, if you do it properly its a great work out. completely disagree with the poster above '2 turns' is two FULL turns otherwise your just wasting the class.
There is always a fat bird at the back who does every single class just so she can see she goes 'spinning' but in reality she just sits there peddling on zero resistance wasting an hour of her time.
Other than that there are some tremendous views

I love spinning and easily burn between 700-800 calories in 45 mins, my advice is to take it easy, get there early and set your bike up, make sure your comfortable and your legs are nearly fully extended at full stroke.
Also get a few minutes warm up before the class starts, get on the bike a pedal with no resistance.

I haven't done spinning in years but it used to be good fun.
Definitely get there early so you can set you're bike up without holding up the class though.
When I went there was a group of women who used the class as their weekly catch up. They'd all just sit at the very back gossiping, laughing and chatting with their bikes set to 0 resistance. If you're doing the class properly you'll struggle to get any words out, was good fun though and yes there can be some good views.
