I can see me regretting posting this, but I need to find an answer.

For about a week now, I've been troubled with terrible wind at night. I wake up feeling bloated, and despite farting enough to wake the whole house, the feeling and farting last for around an hour.

It's generally around 2am. I go to bed between 9 and 10 pm, and am up between 3 and 6am.

The first time, it was an amusing talking point between me and herself. Since then, our sleep has been affected to the extent that we're both shattered, and it's not funny any more.

My diet hasn't changed, and I can't think of a reason for this to happen all of a sudden. I'd be grateful for any suggestions to help me get to the bottom (!) of it.

Do you eat any cheese or dairy products before going to bed? Could be lactose intolerance?

Very rarely, and no more than usual in the last week or so. I'd imagine I'm normally more prone to wind than most, but this is exceptional. I'm off to bed now, and will see what happens.

Need to see your GP if it persists and there has been no obvious change in your routine/ diet. Nocturnal symptoms less common and usually warrant further investigation if persistent.

Are there any common foods that you've consumed in the same period? Might be an intolerance to something - that can develop any time.

Wholemeal bread is a big part of my daily diet. I'll have a couple of slices of toast for breakfast and 4 slices in my sandwiches. I also have a couple of pints of lager after work. I'd hate to have an intolerance for bread. Not as fussed about the lager.

If this is a regular occurrence, get some charcoal tablets. I buy mine off Amazon, they do work

It's a whole new experience for me, and one I'd prefer to cure. If I can't, I'll certainly try charcoal tablets. We used to give them to a dog we had and they didn't work for him! I still miss him, but the smell was bloody awful.

Try avoiding gluten (anything with wheat flour and beer which contains gluten like proteins) for a week and see what happens.

I cured gusty crosswinds of this nature with one of those bio active youghurts before going to bed. They have the gut bacteria in which gets he old digestive system back in line and kill off anything thats lurking.

I think I might try those ,might be a cure rather than covering up the symptoms with the charcoal.
I have a a few other issues which restrict my diet, but diet is where I would start .

Takes about 4-5 days to work and then sorts it out. You should be able to stop the yoghurt after a couple of weeks but its no biggie to carry on.
Just make sure you get one thats got the right stuff in it - I used Bioactive its a small pot but teeming with bacteria.

Good luck.

Why does it affect her sleep as well? Are you one of those blokes that can't resist a dutch oven?

As someone who's just about to start a lengthy period of food intolerance investigation, I can make a useful suggestion. Cut both out of your diet for at least a month. A week is nothing (so I'm told). If you can't cut both - stop the lager for a month. You might be lucky and find the bread is fine. Lager is gassy anyway. So:

1. It might be the lager reacting with the bread ingredients.
2. It might be the bread on its own.
3. It might be both together.

Cut out the lager for a month. If that has no effect, cut out the wholemeal bread as well, for a month. If there's an improvement, reintroduce the bread for a week or 2 and see what happens.

With stuff like this there isn't a quick fix unfortunately. But hopefully its something you can identify relatively quickly.

Far from it! I've been through all that before and I'm now in a very easy, if unfulfilling job.

I'll try this for a while and see how it works. If there's no improvement, I'll look at changing my lunch/beer regime.
