Alternative to Bread ???
Discussion
Hello all,
I'm seeking some help/advise , please .
Single bloke. 59, pretty happy with my lot.
Can’t really be bothered to cook for one in the evening during the week.
Monday’s tea is normally OK as it’s Sundays left over’s .
My weekly diet is probably along the lines of :
Breakfast : Pot Porridge or toast and Marmite
Lunch : Tuna and Mayo sandwich and fruit
Evening meal : Beans on toast or toast and marmite, a sandwich ??
Oh, and coffee. Real stuff up to mid afternoon and then decaf.
Sounds pretty healthy to me at least but I’m not losing weight
Maybe I’m eating too much bread ??
Is there something else I could try ?
Pita beard as an example ??
Thanks.

Ive massively reduced my intake of wheat since the new year, cutting white bread out completely.
Not been easy as I really liked my sandwiches but found I was getting bad heartburn/ indigestion straight after eating it.
Is it just bread you want to stop eating? Ive stopped feeling bloated also, Ive replaced the morning toast with a gluten/wheat free loaf. Its not as nice so I eat less anyway...Daft but sort of works!

Are you calorie counting?
Bread in itself isn't bad, but it I try not to eat it. I do like a pita bread stuffed with salad and pastrami though on occasion.
You could have tuna and mayo with a leafy salad (no dressing) for lunch.
No idea what you could have beans on, for my evening meals I have a bowl of soup or a piece of meat (ie not processed but pre cooked) with some either/selection of salad, bulgar wheat, couscous.
Are you having a full tin of beans and 4 slices of toast or are you having half a tin of beans and 2 slices of toast?
Portion size is more important than what your actually eating, moderation is key. The thing to remember is that you cant un eat something you've eaten, but if after your main meal you are hungry you can have a healthy snack

You say you can't be bothered to cook for one so don't eat proper meals. Cook for 4 and freeze portions. We do this for an elderly uncle he has a portion of what were eating but the day later. So much healthier and cheaper.
I don't think it is necessarily healthier to have make a 'proper' cooked meal a day, I'm lazy, I live on my own, I don't generally cook during the week. Diet is more about having the right number of calories, right protein/carb/fat mix and type & also having enough vitamins and minerals.
Perception of food doesn't always match up to the truth.

How do you get the 'right' macros, vitamins and minerals without eating properly?ReallyReallyGood said:
Could try changing the kind of bread you are eating, wholemeal for example?
You mention it is to lose weight, do you do any exercise? That will make more of a difference (assuming you don't already).
^^^ Ignore this rubbish. Diet is far more important than exercise for weight loss. You mention it is to lose weight, do you do any exercise? That will make more of a difference (assuming you don't already).
You do seem to be eating flour in some form for every meal. Easily done, the producers have become quite inventive at packaging the animal feed for human consumption! It won't help you lose weight; quite the opposite.
Google 'Paleo diet' for some ideas on how to eat without cereals. Google 'Taubes Why We Get Fat' for more information on why.

Anybody recommending "paleo diet" should be ignored. A balanced diet of about 2k calories with exercise will see you lose weight.
Assuming it's weight loss we're talking about, start by working out how many calories your body needs to maintain itself at the weight you're at. At 59 it's likely to be a smidgen less than it used to be, so it pays to err on the side of pessimism.
Once you've got that baseline number it's just a case of lowering how much you put in, offsetting it with exercise, or both. Shoot for 20% less and you should find yourself dropping 1-2lb per week and not suffering too much. Tracking it helps a huge amount, it can be a bit of a pain at first but it's worth it long term. MyFitnessPal seems to be de rigeur. I'd also track any exercise you do, but I'd say that's less important personally.
I'd also suggest you work out what balance of protein, fat and carb your body requires (macros). It's usually the preserve of people doing strength training but it's helped me an awful lot in terms of losing flab too.
