Videonystagography tests? Vertigo.
Discussion
Off to Manila on Wednesday for some tests, having suffered from vertigo on an occasional basis over the last two years.
Anybody ever done these tests before?
I've been pretty good for about six months, but the last couple of weeks it has come back a little at times. Weird stuff, like typing on the keyboard, then look up at the screen, and the whole room spins a quarter turn. Just walking into the docs earlier today, it felt like the pavement had tilted to the side.
I work offshore, and I'm on the sick right now due to this, could not face flying halfway round the world then spending a month on a ship, thinking this could get worse at a moments notice.

I've been diagnosed with that benign para positional vertigo thingy and was shown a simple fix.
It's usually age related and is due to small crystals forming in the fluid in the inner ear which
in turn brush against the fine hairs that control balance.Your eyes tell the brain one thing but the
brushed hairs tell it another. This is where you fall over(nearly)
The cure, which worked for me, was simple exercises called Epley manoeuveres which involve
lying on a bed, tipping your head back for half a minute, turning through 45 degrees and so forth.
This collects the debris and directs it into a part of the ear that causes no harm.
Repetition is required over a few days for relief.

There's instructions available online and youtube vids showing the Epley thing, I used it after I had Labyrinthitis as my sense of balance was properly f
ked, it seemed to help get reduce then get rid of the vertigo spells after I recovered from the initial bout(horrific, 10 days in bed vomiting every hour or so as the room spun around me; during the attacks I couldn't stand even with the aid of a wall to lean on, I had to crawl to the bog). It's not quite what it was before but it's good enough; when I first recovered I felt more at home on a moving ship than I did on dry land, which is helpful given my employment!

The doc wrote Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo vs Mennieres disease on my sick note for work.
But that would just be a guess, as he had no test equipment of any sort, just did some maneouvers of my body and head.
Dix-Hallpike test, no equipment needed. As mentioned the Epley manoeuvre is your friend. But that would just be a guess, as he had no test equipment of any sort, just did some maneouvers of my body and head.
Did the tests today, some head-gear to watch my eyes, some moving lights. Plus another one blowing cool and warm air in my ears. I didn't experience any sort of dizziness. it took over an hour, and they dressed me in some gown as apparently people throw up doing the test. I get the results on Friday.
