Getting Dental Implants
Discussion
So over the last few years I have had reoccurring problems with my back molar/gum.
A number of years ago I got a fish bone (yes i know) stuck in my gum just above the tooth. I had previously had route cancel treatment and I never noticed until I got a serious infection. My dentist removed the bone and gave me meds for the infection.
But it has never been the same. I get mild infections (no meds required but abscess around the gum line and mild discomfort) quite regularly and a serious one every 6-8 months.
Today at my regular check up I mentioned that I wanted the problem sorted long term and he suggested removing the tooth and either a denture or an implant. Then he told me the cost, about £2,500! I was somewhat taken a back. He said this would sort my issue 100% as the reason for the infections is because debris getting caught between the tooth and the gum.
is that correct? Is that price about right? I have looked online and it appears a standard cost.
Has anyone gone abroad for treatment? Anything to watch out/avoid?

I combined a trip to the Hungarian Grand Prix with a visit to Smilesavers. They were very professional and did a brilliant job, even if if they surprised me with the amount of work I needed doing.

I had something done under the NHS. It cost the highest tier (~£200 at the time) in their paying system. But it would have not cost me that much more had I had it done privately (£400?). It was not a "proper" implant as that would have cost around the price you were quoted and it would NOT have been covered by the NHS (I was quoted about £2500 by a private dentist just down the corridor in the same practice). I don't know what I had but they put a new fake tooth in. That's an implant to a layman like me but apparently it wasn't.

NHS doesn't cover Molars, Sonofabeesting said:

I had a molar replaced 3mths ago and that cost £2,200. Most of the work was done by my regular dentist but the actual placement of the pillar was done by an implant specialist they bring in - they weren't doing enough in-house to warrant keeping up with the training etc themselves.I'm not a fan of going to the dentist, but it was all remarkably easy, and it works fine.
I have no idea about this, but it occurs to me that if you've had a lot of infection in that area then the bone amount / density etc would need careful checking. Regular aftercare is vital too - of course my dentist said that, but I've read the same thing too.

The 'proper ones' screw into the jaw and are as good or even better than the real thing. The cheap ones involve grinding down the tooth to make a key for the false tooth to be fitted over the now weakened real tooth.......Crap !
The grinding down of a tooth isn't an implant.I had one done on a front tooth approx 10-15 years ago and it is the one of the best things I have had done. It feels and looks just like a real tooth. They consist of a titanium implant that is screwed into the bone ( if you have had infections in there you may need a bone graft). Think mine was about £2000

Pre molar and they do cover them - I'm having 2 done at the moment, cos they both broke
NHS very rarely cover implants"Implants are usually only available privately and are expensive. They're sometimes available on the NHS for patients who can't wear dentures or whose face and teeth have been damaged, such as people who've had mouth cancer or an accident that's knocked a tooth out. "

So what have we had if they are completely new teeth? I'd call them implants but that's not the term the dentist used.
I don't know as it wasn't me that had them!! - it was probably a crown. We = me and Sparky.

Wasn't a crown. I had no tooth there - a hole/gap.
We = me and Sparky.
Bridge then... I don't know but you won't get an implant under the NHS in 99% of casesWe = me and Sparky.
