Care Home or Home Care?

My father in law is getting to the stage that we as a family are struggling to cope . If he goes into a care home will our input into his care be taken away and what happens if we want to take him back home if we feel a care home is not the best place for him.

I think if you're asking the question then a care home is probably the right place for him. I can't think of any reason why you couldn't take him out of a care home, although I don't know anyone who's done that, except to move to a better care home. It's tough, good luck in your decisions and remember your responsibility to your immediate family... an elderly relative can be a huge burden.

firstly a proper assessment needs to be done , this can be started by either Health ( via the GP or District nurses) or via social care (if social worker all ready involved or perhaps via housing provider if living in rented )

the current criteria to get funded for residential care means taking someone back home from a care home is a very serious undertaking ...

Thanks for your replies. What would a proper assessment achieve, I'm not being awkward I just don't know . His doctor and the district nursing team are already involved in what we do and we have "Homeinstaed" care company filling in the gaps we are struggling to fill. We have no state help apart from the doctor and district nurse . He has a motorbillity (sp) car that is kept at his house that we use to bring him out regularly , does anybody know if we would lose that benefit if he were to go into care .
Until very recently he has been very independently minded, we don't want to see him enter the system and effectively be taken away from us .

What is wrong with him so he cannot cope?

Is it a mental illness or is he struggling physically?

Or both?

Care home would be a last resort for me. Unless you have very deep pockets they can be soul destroying places.
