Gilmore's Groin - any experiences?
Discussion
Hi
Been struggling for maybe 4-5 months now with pains in the right side of my groin and occasionally my right nut, from the internet it seems i have all the symptoms of Gilmores groin.
I had an appointment with my GP yesterday who has referred me to a physic, He sort of agreed with my own diagnosis.
has anyone got any experience of the condition and nhs treatment?

Unfortunately yes.
About 6 years ago I got what I thought as a groin strain, 6 weeks, seemed better, back to 11's but still not right... Cue 4 months of consistent pain, deteriorating mobility, several courses of nsaid's from doctors and nothing.
Finally got fed up and went to sports injury specialist who said likely Gilmore's Groin within 5 minutes of hearing symptoms.
Doctor referred me to hospital, waited about 8 weeks from memory to see specialist and after an unpleasant and fairly degrading physical examination was told I'd need a double hernia operation. Due to the nature of the damage scans etc won't really confirm so I was never 100% confident on the diagnosis until after the op!
I waited a further 8 weeks or so for the operation and from the initial issue it was a long slope of reducing physical activity as it got worse. I actually persevered through full games of 11's for a while then jacked it, bizarrely less for the pain during the game and more due to the pain after it and not being able to put my socks on for about 3 days after!
Op was a standard double hernia, open surgery (decent scars!) Inserting mesh to reinforce adductor muscles. Recovery was very very painful and much slower than I expected but that said with 4 weeks I was in the gym and within 8 back to 90% fitness....
Any questions just shout...

Cheers, thats sort of what I am expecting.
Its odd but since i have spoken to the doctor the pain has subsided a bit, even after doing a 6mile fell race on Tuesday night. I have started taking ibroprofen on the doctors advice though so that might be the difference.
My problem due to running, it started around the beginning of the year when i started doing higher mileages in preparation for a marathon. Pain at the start of a run and then once tired stabbing pains each time i coughed or sneezed. Sometimes during sudden movements i get the shooting pains and most days i have a dull ache which varies between the top of my groin and my testicles. Sometimes i wake up in the night in agony with my nuts aching.
It hasn't really stopped me doing anything yet but the issue is getting progressively worse and I'm hoping to get it sorted before it stops me exercising at all.

Sounds very similar although never really felt the pain in my nuts as such, more upper inner thigh where you'd normally feel a groin strain.
If it is Gilmore's Groin the physio is nigh on pointless based on my experience and everything I read about others...that said the hernia op isn't a simple op / recovery so worth trying. Not sure if it was cos I was pretty badly damaged on both sides (surgeons words at post op appointment) but I still have some discomfort and have had a few bad groin strains although I squat and dead lift pretty heavy so puts it under fair bit of strain, as would fell running!!
Good luck with recovery...ps where in the UK are you? It's quite a specialised condition so worth researching specialists, I'm in Glasgow and my physio recommended Dominique Byrne so asked GP for referral to him and that's who ended up doing my op...

Quite an old phrase and there has been quite a lot of work since Gilmore first described the injury and set about fixing them with open surgery.
I had years of on and off groin issues, came to a head about 5 years ago. Referred to this guy http://lloydrelease.com/ by the Aston Villa physio (a contact, wrong shaped ball for me) op on the Tuesday, played rugby on the Saturday with my only nerves around the small wounds where the cutting sticks (tech term) went in. Been amazing ever since
Edit t added only side effect was the biggest blackest balls you've ever seen, I was banned from taking a pic and posting on Facebook by the gf.

wow.and I'm a surgeon
this is clearly the guy to pick if you can
although he's not wearing a mask in theatre, and thus loses a few points from me

Hi all I'm just looking for some feedback to hopefully put my mind at ease , I've recently had my operation for Gilmore's groin (3 weeks ago) both sides. The scar's all healing up well and my mobility is getting much better but I'm now experiencing the symptoms of Gilmore's groin again just on my left side ( which was much the worse side before my operation) . I'm just paranoid this operation hast worked , does anyone know if these symptoms are normal, many thanks.

Hi #the hutch 123. Did the condition you describe above ever improve at all mate? My symptoms are exactly how you explain but I’m around 10 weeks post surgery. Is there any light at the end of the tunnel...ED209 said:

I've just stumbled upon this thread. Never heard of Gilmore Groin before but it sounds very similar to the symptoms I've been suffering for a good while. I play 5s once a week at the moment, but I end up crippled for days after, only feeling slightly better a day or two before I play again. I used to play alot more but had to cut back because of the pain.
The day after playing a game, I wake up and struggle to get out of bed, if a sneeze whilst lying in bed, I get a sharp pain in my groin, and as you mentioned putting my socks on is bloody painful. Getting in and out of the car is an effort and a couple of.times I've found myself stuck on the sofa, only getting off by rolling onto my stomach and crawling off backwards.
By the end of the day I've loosened up a bit, but going to bed resets the pain and mobility issues whereby it gradually eases off as the week goes on. It's like a constant dull ache in my right hip/groin which never really goes and gets significantly worse after 5s.
I've been to the docs and had bloods and xrays taken. All came back fine for other kind of nasties, and the doc put it down to the aches and pains of getting older. He did refer me for physio for which I'm still waiting.
I'm playing 5s again on Thursday and know I'll be gubbed for days after. I really dont want to give up 5s.
After reading this thread I'm of a mind to get another docs appointment. The pain cant just be down to getting older.

I’m just over 12 weeks after my Gilmore groin operation.
I’m unsure if it’s neen successful I had it done at the Oxford hernia clinic.
Most reports say between 6-12 weeks your back to full fitness.
I still have the same aches and pains if not sometimes worse.
Any advice would be great

Seven years on I still get the same feeling and paranioa that I've got a new hernia but a few ultrasounds since keep proving the repair is OK. A bit "ghost feeling" like when someone says they have lost their arm. Seven and a quarter years on I still get the feeling but the consultant when I saw him last a couple of years ago did say if I ever got a hernia again in that location or it "let go" I'd know about it!Thehutch123 said:

I sort of jumped on this thread, but to add for me. In November of last year I went for an MRI and last week I got the results. Supposedly I'm suffering from a Labrum tear. I could get surgery but the benefits might not outweigh the negatives.
I haven't played 5s, or properly exercised since before Christmas, so feeling good hip wise ( More through work circumstances than anything else)
The consultant suggested I didn't take up marathon running and consided swimming or cycling as opposed to 5's. Alternatively I could continue as is, and see him in a few years for a hip replacement. But either way I'd probably be back for a hip surgery, sooner or later.
Looking forward to starting back on the 5s

Your symptoms sound a lot like what i have been experiencing lately hoping its just a hernia now thoughI haven't played 5s, or properly exercised since before Christmas, so feeling good hip wise ( More through work circumstances than anything else)
