Alternatives to Ramipril
Discussion
A couple of years ago I injured my knee playing football which meant ACL reconstruction.
As part of the pre-op checks I was diagnosed with high blood pressure. Not really a surprise given family history (both parents and maternal grandmother have / had it)
I wanted the surgery quick-smart so took what I was prescribed and had the surgery 18 months ago.
Jump to now and I've noticed that I get very hot. I've never been particularly nesh, but I've noticed it more and more. I know it's summer but I feel hot most of the time.
My leap to this conclusion has been clouded by a couple of things. We live in the hottest flat in the world (27+ deg most days, recently) and an office where people moan when the air con goes on, so it gets hot and stuffy.
So I googled the ramipril side effects. These include (from a couple of sources):
- sweating
- chills
- cold sweats
- signs of infection (eg fever, chills, persistent sore throat)
That's not an exhaustive list but I've had pretty much all of those, including the signs of infection which I thought was a cold / fever I couldn't shake for a long time about 2 months ago.
I realise it could actually have been a cold I couldn't shake....etc, etc. and my temp was up.
When I drive home from work my back ends up drenched; the sheets are soaked at night and I can sit in the lounge and feel sweat building up around my neck. I can't say exactly when this started but I never used to be like this. My wife actually said recently that when she met me (7 years ago) one of the things she noticed was that I didn't sweat that much!
So, are there alternatives to Ramipril, could this hot feeling be a side effect?
Amy suggestions to lowering blood pressure without using drugs?

Been on these for a few years now.
Find that the blood pressure is well controlled with these , along with some life style changes eg monitor weight / alcohol intake / stress etc
Also sweat a lot as well summer & winter , and know a friend that has the same issues , since being on them ...
Just back from a cruise in the Med & am now at the stage where I choose shirts & T-shirts that dont show sweat stains eg checked shirts / light couloured T-shirts.
My choice is to stay on them as control of the blood pressure is more important than a bit of sweat .
Best cure for hypertension is to buy a puppy , be happy & walk to de- stress !!!!
Went to the GP for my annual MOT a few weks ago and my results were the best I had in years .
Even the GP could not beleive the results until I mentioned the new wee puppy .

I have a 5 month old baby, would that work?
I can genuinely say I haven't been more content with life than in the last 5 months.
However, my exercise has gone down:
- I used to cycle regularly
- I never really got back into football after the injury, due to getting in the habit of going to see my team play every other week and a bit of an idiot running the team I played for.
I feel bad for leaving my wife for hours a day at the weekend as well as giving her the responsibility during the week, so I can't see the exercise increasing in the short term.

There are other blood pressure drugs that work in a completely different way from Ramipril so presumably can have totally different side effects and might not have any noticeable effects in your case.
Maybe your GP can prescribe one of those instead, or even reduce the Ramipril dose and add a small dose of something like Amlodipine to go with it.

Yeah there a quite a few different types out there. Amlodipine was a nightmare for me - gave me massive cramps and swelled legs. Ramipril didn't seem to do anything (or lower pressure). I've had the best results with Perindopril, but everyone is different to how they react so go talk to GP.Maybe your GP can prescribe one of those instead, or even reduce the Ramipril dose and add a small dose of something like Amlodipine to go with it.
Yes , agree there are other drugs available ...
However a few years ago I changed my medication , [ possibly to stop the sweats ] and my wife thought that I was having an affair , as I just could not 'perform' !!!!
Went back onto the original medication and within a few days , I was back in the good books....
I beleive that is quite common ....

I went to see my GP last week and she was very helpful.
Basically she suggested I take a week off the meds to see if the symptoms go, and assuming they do she's given me a prescription for another type of drug (Not sure which off the top of my head)
So, 4 or 5 days in and symptoms do seem to be better. This is particularly good as I spent Monday and Tuesday in Alicante, where it was 37 deg when we landed at 6pm
My blood pressure in the couple of times I've checked it hasn't been so bad.
147/92 (second day with no meds, evening)
140/79 (3rd day, morning)
141/84 (4th day, morning)
No readings yesterday or today
