I started a new job earlier in the year.
I spend 85% of my working day driving now, and as a result, have gained 3/4 a stone.

I'm type 1 diabetic so could really do with shifting it.
Diet is cornflakes for breakfast with skimmed milk, 2 slices of brown, seedy bread for lunch, apple and bannana and some form of green beans to pick on through the day.
Might have a pack of crisps if I'm peckish.
Dinner is usually proper cooked meal one night and something just bunged in the oven the next.
Rarely eat out. Maybe take away once a month if that.

Proper exercise is occasional, but always try and park a few extra spaces away from the site In visiting to make the walk a bit further.

Bar exercising more, which I struggle for with time, any suggestions?

Eat less.

Calories burned < Calories eaten = weight gain
Calories burned > Calories eaten = Weight loss

What is the something bunged in the oven? Could be hiding a lot of calories. Tea/Coffee during the day with milk & sugar?
Try little things to be more active.

Nope. I don't drink any tea/coffee. Just 2-3 litres of water a day.

Oven wise, its sausages, breaded fish, chicken, stuff like that with potato waffles.

yes

You describe a fairly sedentary lifestyle. Without changing the exercise side of the equation you have to cut calories. Forget the bags of crisps, eat a carrot.

All that chucked in the oven, ditch it. Salmon/tuna steaks, chicken breast with salads/vegetables. No potato waffles.

Avoid picking up crisps and pasties when you pay for fuel. I used to drive for a job and thats where you pick up extra fuel for yourself.

And again... yes

It's a complete myth that every man needs 2,500 calories a day. In reality, you probably only need 2,000 calories a day to maintain your weight.

Diet is cornflakes for breakfast with skimmed milk, 2 slices of brown = 500 calories
seedy bread for lunch, apple and bannana and some form of green beans to pick on through the day = 600 calories
Might have a pack of crisps if I'm peckish = 100 calories
Dinner is usually proper cooked meal one night and something just bunged in the oven the next = could be 1,000-1,500 calories depending on what you eat

I reckon you're regularly eating 2,300+ calories on a daily basis. If it was me...

Cut out either the cereal of toast - you don't need both.
Lunch looks fine.
Cut out the crisps and replace with nothing - you don't need it.
Dinner - keep everything (for ease) but ditch the potato waffles; you're eating enough carbs throughout the day as it is.

ETA: changed total calorie calculation - doh!

Or eat fewer waffles. How many do you have? Photo your next dinner if it's the same size as your normal amount.

Also, bear in mind when you're eating the calories. Your main calorie intake is just before your most sedentary period (when you sleep). A substantial portion of that then gets laid down as fat.

Having a starchy breakfast will give your body more carbs to work with during your most active period and help you stop snacking, and then if you have a very small dinner you should avoid growing flab while you sleep.

Also, ditch the company car and buy something without power steering. Plenty of extra exercise that way. wink

Something perhaps a little different.

There is some evidence that weight is not just simply a result of calories in versus calories out, they are different types of calories (sourced from different food types etc) and depending on the time of day you eat them.

I also know when on the road for long times of the day, it can be very difficult to eat well. I worked for a large company and at out senior manager meetings, I could tell by the body type the men and women who had regional roles (large amounts of travel) versus head office roles.

There is some early evidence that reducing the hours (spread of time) in the day you eat can help reduce weight. So for example only eating between 9:00 and 5:00 (and basically fasting the other 16, of which half the time you are asleep any way).

As a cyclist I am constantly striving to loose weight, I've had some success recently by simply skipping breakfast (I know this will set alarm bells ringing for many) eating a healthy normal lunch, (avoiding snacks during the day) and then having my evening meal as soon as I get home....ideally around 7:00... So no eating between 8pm and around 11:00 am (I have my lunch very early....in part because I'm hungry).

I appreciate it's not the perfect health food diet some would advocate, however it is something you can simply try next week and see how it goes.

(Needless to say I would suggest you seek some advice around not eating breakfast etc and having type 1 diabetes)

1) next time you make something to eat, divide it in half and freeze/throw away/give to dog the second half

2) get used to feeling hungry again

this is weight loss.

now I'll launch a DVD range based on this and make £12,345,000,000,000

Do what??? I thought as a cyclist you'd be constantly striving to put on weight! I think you need to cycle more. biggrin

As for missing out meals or only eating within a certain window, that works, contrary to your 2nd paragraph, because you're just eating less food.

I once read the ideal weight for a cyclist (that likes going uphill) is 2lbs for every inch tall, I'm at 2.5 lbs per inch.....which puts me at boarder line overweight on the BMI scale (but that's a conversation for another time.....) biggrin

OP rather than change your whole diet overnight - just do one simple big step (and see how it goes) skip breakfast or skip evening meal or bin all bread/cereals ........good luck

Ah right. Just figured you'd be burning so many calories. I entered an endomondo calorie burn competition and the cyclists just dominated.

Well, its been a month or so, so I'd thought I'd update this.
I've shed half a stone. No more exercise, just cutting out carbs (or as much as I can from me evening meals and have stopped buying crap in the day.

Just a couple of kilos to go and I'll be back to 12 stone smile

Very rarely. Maybe once every 2 months. And only one or 2.
