Hi all,

I've been off for three weeks and just been signed off for another three. I already feel like I'm taking the piss as I do not feel unwell* I've never been off more than a couple of today's in my life and not sure how this works.

So I have been given permission to fly, by my doctor/consultant I have been asked to do gentle excercise and keep mobile but not do too much... I have access to a place in Spain....

The question is in three weeks if I am allowed back by my doctor and I turn up with a tan how bad will that look? Am I allowed to travel abroad when off sick or am I supposed to hang around the house all the time.

  • i actually had a serious incident and I am not fit for work but I feel ok as long as don't do too much.

If doctor signed you off from work there shouldnt be a problem as long as you are able to fly.

The biggest Problem will be your other collegues who might think you are taking the piss, but it is nothing to do with them.

It's my boss I'm worried about. They all know it was serious but in this day and age I don't want to have anybody raising eye brows thing is I really am quite ill.

that is your dilemma, legally doctor signs you off your time is your own in reason,

if you could get the doctor to say it would aid your recovery, all the better.

Be up front & open with your boss. Don't let him interpret anything & you should be fine.

Yes, this is what I'd do.

Discuss it with him and see what his response his. Provided you make it very clear that the doctor still believes you to be unfit to work however able to fly, I can't see the issue.

Alternatively, buy a big hat.

TBH, you could get a tan sitting in the garden convalesing here... (ok, not this weather hehe) but the weather at the weekend.

Be honest, ask your boss if he would object to you spending the time abroad being waited on hand & foot & possily recovering sooner than if you were doing everything yourself.

High factor sun cream and sit in the shade.

Up to you either be open and honest or do it on the QT. Personally I wouldn’t mind if someone who worked for me was signed off sick with an injury/op recovery etc.

Anecdotally someone in another area had man troubles and decided she needed to get away for a bit, 3 months signed off sick and went to Australia…….
