Ph Doctors help.

They are building houses close to our estate... I thought Id been hearing a generator or pump of some sort running all though the night for a week or so..

I asked the wife if she heard it and she couldn't...I switched everything off at home and still I could hear it. In total silence, the wife couldn't.

Ive now discovered I have a very low humming noise in my left ear..almost constant but slightly pulsating. Its really strange. Its doesnt sound like is my ear and sounds like its outside my house, like a generator or pump as mentioned.

Its getting worse, I can hear it over the TV now. Ive played in many bands etc and always thought Id had a little tinnitus but thats more of a ringing sounds.

Little worried as its very distracting and getting worse. Ears are clean from what I know,

Any ideas?

Does sound like Tinnitus, which I believe can take quite a few different forms, my dad has it, he really struggled at first but seems to cope better with it now.

I've had such noises since I was a teen. Started off with hearing the church bells faintly in the distance, but all night....That took a while to work out and I was horrified when I realised it was inside my own head. eek

Then it was a couple of tuning forks rotation around my head. After a few years came the packs of starlings twittering all the time, and just after that came the traffic rumbling by outside the house.

I get all of them at the same time usually, and sometimes it seems absolutely deafening, but I try not to focus on it. A few years ago I had a carpal tunnel operation, and for some reason the noises seemed to get twice as loud from that day on. 'They' say that is just my imagination, but who knows....

I find it easier to sleep if there is some sort of background noise to distract my ears. You can buy white noise generators, but I've never tried one myself.

Only thing I can think of is, Ive recently bought a bike and use in ear headphones when on it, which has been quite a lot.

Its getting worse... prominent now even just sitting during daytime with background noise.

Worth going to doctors or better to ear specialist ?

Pretty annoying!

Sorry Hoofy,

Ive had a particularly stress ull time with work actually with staff problems, sackings etc. I don't feel particularly stressed now as the issues were all resolved around 2 weeks ago, but I was VERY stressed during that spell.

Assuming your life now has less stress, I'd expect things to get better. Make sure you get enough sleep, too, though.

Ive cooke an appointment with a hearing clinic. I assume my ears are very clean, I use cotton buds daily ( Although Im worried this might actually be bad ) but I really like the idea of getting them professionally cleaned, do you think that might help ?

Daily??? eek

Are you pulling out clumps of wax everyday? laugh

I use cotton buds about every 3 months to remove any wax bits... and it leaves me with a tender overly sensitive ear for a day or so.

Can't believe shoving cottonbuds in your ears everyday is helping you.

Really!? Id Imagine my ears would be pretty manky if I left that long,

I usually give them a quick clean daily, each morning.

I've shoved cotton buds in my ears every day since I was a teenager. I also have strange hearing problems and regular pain in the ears.

I hear humming and ringing noises regularly.

FFS. Stop poking the ear drum. If it hurts, you're going way too deep. It's not that you need them professionally cleaned but you probably need to stop damaging them.

I'm nowhere near a Doctor, just a lowly Paramedic smile

However, there are a monsterous amount of differential diagnosies for the symptoms you are describing, and as such, you need to see your GP.

It may be neurologial, it may be a form of hearing damage resulting in tinnitus as you've speculated too. Two questions I might humbly offer though are - what is your age, and when was the last time you had your blood pressure checked? Hypertension and carotid sclerosis can also cause these symptoms, but that's usually something for people in later life.

Not wishing to scaremonger, just trying to illustrate the many causes - so as I said, to stop the speculation, see your Doc.

It could well be neurological or related to blood pressure. IANAD either, just going on what I've seen friends and family go through. I'd have expected the OPer to be wobbling around more rather than just hearing noises.

I used to stuff cotton buds in my ears fairly regularly, but I got ear ache almost every time I did it, so I stopped a year ago. It does feel good having a scrape around in there though. cloud9

They do say you should never put anything in your ears though, as they are delicate, and self cleaning.

Anyway, the hearing specialist will simply do a hearing test, then tell you your ears are fine. He can't hear what you can, so unless he sees something physically wrong you'll probably leave his office feeling a little frustrated......
