Pure gym any good?
Discussion
I go to the one in Newcastle, as mentioned it's spacious, good range of new equipment, good facilities.
Cost 9.99 a month and open 24hours which is ideal for working strange shifts. Quite often have been the only one in the whole gym.
Peak times it's busy. Few times I've been at peak time there's been groups of mirror posers and gym 'selfie' takers so I avoid these times as much as possible.
Definitely worth the price though. My local gym is £12.99 a month and is about 1/16th of the size with equipment from 1970's so I'm happy to travel a bit further

Been a member at Hammersmith branch for a couple of months and it's pretty good. Cheap and cheerful in terms of service, but open 24hrs and 2 floors of equipment.
Like any mainstream gym 90% of the punters are average folks getting some exercise whilst the other 10% are at opposite ends of the spectrum (and there's always that one bloke that is definitely on the 'spectrum' as it were!).

no complaints here either, my one has plenty of machines, lots of space, changing areas are clean and the place is tidy. for £10 a month you really cannot complain. the one i use is actually an empty office block they have rented, they use some open plan office areas, seems to work ok.
girlfriend uses some of the classes, they're not the greatest, but the fact most of them are included in the monthly fee you cant really complain.
feel sorry for the staff though, they are mostly 'personal trainers' who work a set amount of hours/number of classes in return for being allowed to offer personal training to members of the gym. a friend started 'working' there, but i/she couldnt see how it was possible for her to make a living on this arrangement

Been part of puregym for overs 2 years in Sheffield now.
The weights areas get busy during peak times, up till say 9pm. But if you're happy to go at strange times you can have the gym to yourself.
I used to go at around midnight, and i'd be there with only a few other people.
Recently they've upgraded all the equipment as well so for £18 a month you can't go wrong.
If you want a personal trainer, look elsewhere; they're not very clever from what i've seen.

PT's range from hapless to great everywhere. I go to a pure gym, good price. I flick bewteen being happy and annoyed. Two squat racks and a climbing frame with squat rack attachment, with four OL bars. I've told them they need more, peak times is annoying, but I tend to go outside mostly. I hear mine is getting more room for the free weights bit, which would be good. The lack of a heavy bag annoyed me when I first joined, but I got over it.
One PT at mine is a top callisthenics guy, helping me with my back lever. One wishes to get into competitive lifting, his deadlift and squat match mine, but he's 40lbs lighter and is only young 20s.

The Pure Gym model requires costs to be ruthlessly controlled, not the fit out so much which is a decent standard but the ongoing variables.
They employ two staff directly, a manager who is paid c £28,000 and a deputy on £18,000.
They are tasked with running the club on a day to day basis and hitting all KPI's which will require using self employed Personal Trainers to work the gym floor doing inductions, exercise correction and motivation (16 hours per week) in exchange they pick up PT clients.
The turnover of trainers will be very high as reaslistically customer service paying £15 a month won't want to pay £25 for an hour with someone so most don't last more than 2 months.
If you don't want any help and just want a clean, well fitted gym with shed loads of kit that works and is available 24/7 they are fine.
If you are looking for a more "Full service" you need to look elsewhere. Think Travelodge V Premier Inn.
At the moment Pure and the like are the only gyms that are growing, to be honest, as others have quoted, at fees of £10 to £20 a month it's ridiculously cheap, too cheap and it devalues the product and results in a much higher drop out rate but they are marketed so aggressively that it's an option many choose.

I was paying 58 quid on a rolling 1 month contract and it was good, friendly and used the steam and Jacuzzi.
The nearest pure gym until this one is converted, is 22 quid a month with multipass, which is good value, but I don't know what equipment they will use . I liked the virgin equipment, I don't do weight so mainly use the cross trainers and tread mills.
it will be a shame as there was always nice cars outside, a 458 and some nice Porsches.

My mate goes to the Acton one, says you get some very very dodgy characters in there especially on the weights, surprisingly. Told me once these Russian chaps had their own ghettoblaster banging out russian tunes and they took every single available weight and when he asked to use one set they properly fronted up 'yit tiking thi pees meyat!'
