I did something to my left ankle. Not cool driving a manual car. Had to get a lift into work everyday. Otherwise, it isn't a problem. Keep it dry so maybe sit in a bath rather than shower. Resist sticking rulers down the cast to scratch because you might break the skin which will lead to ongoing irritation.

Other than that, it's fairly easy to deal with. I was quite mobile on crutches and got confident with moving very quickly (eg faster than someone might walk) but like a Dalek had problems with stairs.

Sorry to hear that you've broken your foot, I can empathise; I broke my fifth metatarsal and calcaneus cuboid (yep, real name) two weeks ago (I also tore the ligaments for good measure) playing football.

I'm quite surprised that you managed to walk around with it. I tore my ligaments (in the same foot) about four years ago and the pain was probably worse than the break, although this break is causing pain over a longer period of time - I managed to drive home with a broken foot but couldn't move it the next day (so well done you). My treatment thus far:
-Xray
-Plaster cast day after break, received crutches
-Moon boot fitted on 2nd day (cast removed)
-Follow up appointment in January (~3 months after break) which may not be needed (up to me to attend)
-No mention of physio
-Had the option to be signed off from work for a month but I can work from home so declined this

Movement has gradually come back albeit with pain. I typically walk with crutches and the moon boot for the majority although I can walk without the crutches for a short time/distance. Recovery period is typically 4-6 weeks I'm told, although the foot is rather complex so I suspect this differs on a case by case basis. There is no hard/fast rule for when you can drive, it's merely when you are able to be in complete control of the vehicle (i.e. emergency stop).

I was also told not to remove the boot prematurely and to make sure that I had no pain before getting rid; not sure if you'll be given the boot (poor pun) but it's worth being aware of. The foot/ankle can take several months to heal properly; it took around 12 months for me to recover fully from my torn ankle ligaments i.e. to be able to kick a ball properly without pain or fear that my foot mind end up in the adjacent pitch.

Good luck on your recovery.

I broke a heel, was on crutches with a cast then moon boot for 6 weeks each. Crutches are a proper chore as you can't carry most things with them (like a cup of tea). Moon boot was fine. If they cast you up expect to lose a lot of muscle mass in that leg, mine was stick thin and looked weird next to the other leg.
You should get referred for physio as well, it's worth it.

Went up for ball, came down awkwardly and heard a sound like a wet twig breaking. Looked down and foot was off at 90deg with sole pointing out to the right. Went down straight away, ambulance arrives, medic gives me entonox and cuts trainer off. I see him talking to my mates, then he counts to 3 and they all jump on me and hold me down while he pulls my foot and twists it back on witha massive 'CRUNCH'. I screamed. I mean, realy fking screamed. He checks foot for warmth as the disclocation has caused the circulation to be completely cut off. Foot is black but starts to warm up and he reckons, whilst in the ambulance that I might keep it!! Was a 'potts' fracture and cost me 10 weeks off work and a few operations.

As an aside, the screw you can see goiNg in at an angle was taken out as I was walking through a doorway months after and clipped my ankle on the door frame - right on the screw-head. Ack!

Still feel it and can't run too far but it's fine.

Jesus Christ!

I bet you've learnt one thing from this all: never call an ambulance.

Oh, and when your "mates" are in a huddle talking and keep looking over at you and nodding, start running (well, as best as you can).

I feel off my foot as in twisted sideways and caught the sole of my shoe on a piece of paving slab, i heard a tearing noise as i fell over, it bloody hurt. Over the next few days it really hurt,i soldiered on and i drove a round trip of 500 miles to buy a new car plus drove to Frankfurt for the motorshow and completed a lap of the ring on the way back home another 900miles,the following day i went to casualty and i had X-rays taken, id broken the 5th metatarsal, the doctors advice was to NOT drive and keep it elevated,he was unhappy when i told him where id been, i had thought it was nothing and just a sprain Two years on and it still irritates me,ladders are painful as are stairs sometimes.

Just seen this thread. Why are they sending you for a CT scan ?

Im in the same position as you at the moment after I went over on it playing football about 6 weeks ago. Im back walking and I can run on it, however if I have my weight on the outside of my foot or bend it in a certain position it bloody hurts still. I played my first game since the injury last night and my foot is aching like mad again today.

TBH at the time I just thought id grin and bear it as the docs wont do anything anyway. Just wondered if it worth my while going and seeing someone.

Cheers

My partner broke left ankle and right metatarsal. A metal plate fixed to left ankle and plaster to knee: plaster on right foot!!

3 months before mobile on crutches. That was 3 years ago, right as rain now She's chosen to leave the plate in but could have it remove if she wished.

Keep exercising gently otherwise the joints can loose flexibility quite quickly
