Hi all,

Looking for some advice regarding shaving rash.

So, currently I shave with the standard Mach 3 razor and shaving gel. This always leaves me with sore skin and spots for days.

I've been doing some reading in regards to using a DE safety razor and using a proper shaving cream and a good balm.

I just wanted to know, is it really worth the money? Does it help with the irritation? I only ever shave once a week.

Thanks,
Kam.

I found it helped reduce the irratation by about 80%.
There is a learning curve though and my first DE shave almost required a transfusion.

DONT PUSH THE RAZOR INTO THE SKIN just use the weight of it and be careful with the angle.

I used to suffer from it too.

I found just warm water and a Mach 3 did me much better.

Just put some moisturiser on after and hey presto!

This is what I currently do, it doesn't seem to work for me.

Thanks for that, I am tempted to give it a go.

same here, wasn't worth the pain of really bad shaving rash to keep clean shaven.

Long running thread somewhere; lots of advice there.
Will link to it later.

Boots do a DE razor that's not expensive, it's a good way of trying and seeing if it's for you.

I used to suffer really bad with this. Ended up seeing a Doc about it. Anyway his advise (and I've been doing this ever since) ditch all post shave mens products, balms, aftershave etc.

First don't shave for a few days to give your skin a break and clam the existing rash down. Then shave with a nice sharp razor and shaving gel of the sensitive skin variety, then apply some, you'll like this.....Johnsons Baby lotion to your face.

I now wet shave every morning, apply some baby lotion and I also try to avoid shaving on a Sunday to give the face a break. Standard size bottle of baby lotion lasts about a year as you don't need to put much on.

I cleared my rash up in a week and it hasn't returned since. (Been 20 odd years now)

I've been using a DE safety razor for about 6 years now, best thing I have ever done for shaving as I hardly get any rash these days. Get yourself a trial pack of blades £10 from connaught shaving so you can find which blade works for you. I personally like the feather blades, really sharp so less passes over the skin.

had just the same using mach3 or whatver it was , terrible rash and used to dread shaving

the de razor sorted it a treat , you can pick up a basic de razor and pack of blades for about a fiver in a chemists , it doesnt have to be expensive at all , see if that feels better then you can always buy a better handle and a selection pack of blades if you want

Electric razor has done it for me for the last 40 years. Not a single cut or any sign of a rash.

I now wait for the ridicule, man up comments wink

Some people are just not suited to wet shaving.

Nivea after shave lotion. There's a sensitive version which is great. I had rashes like that for 30 years until someone told me about the Nivea stuff and I've never had a problem since. I wish it had been around/I had known about it a long time ago.

Where do you keep the razor after you shave? Also, do you dry it straight away after shaving? The reason being is that rust forms (at a level invisible to the naked eye) on the blades, if you leave it wet.

This rusting dulls the razor prematurely and dull razors can lead to shaving rash. Some people even leave their razors in oils and alcohol. But I think that's overkill. Just leave it somewhere dry i.e not the bathroom.

I used to suffer really badly from ingrown hairs. At 14/15 I was okay shaving but around 17/18 my neck would have so many ingrown hairs. I switched to DE etc etc which helped but I still got them. I now just use a babyliss 1.4mm which has fixed my issues as the hair grows out and is trimmed whilst still out. Shaving is hugely overrated.
