Futuristic Gym Help
Discussion
I know this isn't technically a question related to health matters but figured this would be the best place to put it.
My old man is writing a book set roughly 100 years in the future and is at a point on a star ship where they are training in the ships gym (weights/cardio)
He wants a description of all in one equipment that could be used to train the whole body, possibly a pod of some description. I have suggested something that can increase the strength of gravity I.E Five times stronger than earths, but other than that I'm kind of struggling.
If anyone has any input or ideas I would love to hear them.
Thanks in advance!!

So how much do I get in royalties? :-)
Based on sales, I wouldn't be expecting a hefty cheque in the post any time soon :-Dnumtumfutunch said:
My Concept 2 is 11y old and I could easily see it in the scenario you suggest
Seriously
Will have a look into that, thanks.Seriously

OK on a computer now not phone so can type a little! The Concept 2 rower is, in my opinion, the gym equipment equivalent of the cockroach - nothing to look at but completely fit for purpose and indestructible
Mines now ancient in relative terms and will probably take me to the grave (literally perhaps LOL)
I like the idea of seeing one in an episode of Star Trek or something, it would certainly do the job youre asking of it whilst getting a smirk from regular gym junkies as it is not unreasonable that one would last a looong looong time and so still be doing sterling service in zero gravity
But vitamin pills and muscle implants would be awesome too

Cheers
The idea of increasing or decreasing gravity is a good one, actually.
It will enable you to do bodyweight exercises without the need to find harder progressions OR make harder exercises easier to enable you to perform something to challenge a particular muscle in a particular way.
For instance, a bodyweight squat (air squat) might be a challenge for some but a gym regular who eats suitably (or, well, eats), will find a bodyweight squats easy to do hence the need to load up a bar with weights.
Same might go for a bodyweight horizontal row - tough for a beginner (so reduce gravity), piss easy for an experienced gymer.
Otherwise, cybernetic implants to increase physical ability. I think The Reality Dysfunction (The Night's Dawn) had an interesting aspect to the way soldiers were built to enable them to do superhuman things. Can't remember the details, though. Otherwise, just google Cyberpunk stuff.
