NHS operation waiting time

Over the past 18 month I've gone through every scan/examination under the book to establish if I'm a candidate to have surgery for my epilepsy.
After having these done, I was told by my consultant I am.
I now have an appointment to see the surgeon that will carry out the operation on 5th May.
I was wondering if there's normally another long wait after seeing the surgeon, or do they generally have the patient booked in for the operation, and there would be a short time after seeing him that I'd have the operation carried out?
I was expecting to wait many months, but I've been told by someone I know that they carry out the surgery pretty close after seeing the surgeon?... Is there any truth in that?

Waiting times depend on how long the surgeons waiting list is. The times can be shortened for people undergoing common procedures such that any operator (not necessarily the surgeon you saw pre-op) performs them. However you are having highly specialised surgery and I would imagine that epilepsy surgery will only be performed by your surgeon in that hospital. I suspect your surgeon will give you a rough indication of waiting time when they offer you a procedure. One other factor to bear in mind is that epilepsy surgery would not be prioritsed over cancer surgery for instance in the eveny of significant pressures on post-op bed availability (that's not a decision taken by medics)After having these done, I was told by my consultant I am.
