Low/no carb diet questions
Discussion
I've recently re started at the gym and am enjoying it but looking to cut carbs for a bit to burn off fat ( not got loads to do am 6'1" and a little over 14 st.
My main questions really were, I know you're meant to stick to leafy salad etc and protein but can you have any fruit at all, say an apple or banana per day?.
The other thing I wanted a more definitive answer on, that I'm finding conflicting things about is drinks, I do enjoy water well enough anyway so it's not a big problem, but sometimes I do like a can of soft drink and occasionally I have a red bull of a morning if coffee doesn't do the trick, usually I've had the normal version of a soft drink but obviously would swap to something like Coke Zero instead if I wanted a drink other than water. Can you have the odd can of sugar free soft drink, say one or two a week or are they a no no?.

Started my regime about two months ago, 14.5 stn & 6ft, getting podgy so I thought right time to knuckle down.
I have a heath issue that limits my exercise ability, so it's just work and a few small walks at week ends. Cut out Carbs, inc bread, potatoes, bickkies, Booze and all the stodge.
I'm also Diabetic so loads of fruit is out but I do eat about 3 apples a day. Changed my dietary intake to to include basic protein mostly chicken, Eggs, some fish and occasional red meat. I do drink a lot of Diet free pop, about 3+ pints a day, they only have minimal calories litre.
All my food is home made by Mrs Big Al. and so far have lost 1stn 5lbs, so I'm well chuffed.
I'm well into salads and veg now and tend to bulk up on these to get the full up feeling. Veg soups for lunch mostly, very low calorie but fill you up.
In fact I'm eating more volume now that I used too, the difference is it's all low calorie stuff.
Appears I'm allowed 1200 cals, I average around 6-800 cals a day.
Take a look at the BBC good food channel, in the healthy options, good recipes and a calorie counter with each meal.

Check out the keto diet thread on this here forum. The answer to your question is probably (I'm not going to claim to be a nutritionist) the fruit in moderation is ok, couple of apples a day won't hurt but I've cut down (we get free fruit at work at the moment, can't turn down free food) the fizzy drinks should be out altogether, on any diet, they're all a terrible idea and just sugar with no redeeming nutritional value, hard for me to say and do.

800 cals a day at 6 foot = eating disorder in my book I have a heath issue that limits my exercise ability, so it's just work and a few small walks at week ends. Cut out Carbs, inc bread, potatoes, bickkies, Booze and all the stodge.

Nothing is more depressing to me than the low carb/ketosis diets being espoused nowadays.
Your body wants glycogen as its primary fuel, and your brain cannot function without glucose (it has to break down protein and turn it into glucose because of your diet).
I started a High Fat/Low Carb (Ketosis) diet at Christmas for a number of reasons and I'm pleased I did.
I do have some periods of expriencing some mental dullness but on the whole my diet is much, much healthier. I think there's going to be a revolution in how we perceive and use various fats.
I do sometimes crave take aways, chocolate etc but I'm very happy with the weight loss and the overall improvement in how healthy I feel. Waking up is much quicker too. Got all the info I need from reading up in keto diets at reddit.

Nothing wrong with eating fruit, its all about calories in vs calories out.My main questions really were, I know you're meant to stick to leafy salad etc and protein but can you have any fruit at all, say an apple or banana per day?.

Nothing wrong with this, I usually have 1 x 600ml bottle and one can a day and I've lost 10 stone. If you want to go low carb I would keep the fruit way down too - one apple will keep you out of ketosis for 24 hours. Ditto a glass of alcohol. I would also use "Ketostix" or similar to check you are in ketosis, and wean yourself off even the sugar free drinks if you can - you are keeping an addiction alive there.
Big Al is on a calorie restriction diet, by the sound of it. They work too but they are not the same thing - you need a lot more willpower, for one thing.
Best of luck, whatever course you choose.

Have to agree on virtually eliminating all fruit except blueberries, if you have to have some. Although I don't eat those any more because of the lack of discipline.
Sugar, see? Even though they contain less than most other fruit, it's really difficult (for me at least) to eat them in moderation because we've been programmed since childhood to get/have/expect sugar pretty regularly.
I've been drinking quite a lot of Aldi ZX zero coke and that's not helping to break the cycle either.

Sorry Al, my post comes across harsh, not my intention, just seems excessively low to me.
Well done on the loss so far, and I hope it continues to work for you
No probs, not taken as personal.Well done on the loss so far, and I hope it continues to work for you

One just has to go with what works for them, nearly at my goal and looking forward to a bacon sarnie at the weekend, jeeze I've worked hard for it.
