Chain Smoking Around Baby 9 Hours A Day
Discussion
Not posting under my usual username to protect those involved. I will however be showing any responses everyone involved.
My mother and sister babysit our 17 month old baby during the working week typically 9am until 6pm. During the day they spend 90% of the time in a open plan kitchen/sitting area with the baby playing in a playpen on the floor.
They are fantastic at looking after her but consistently smoke with nothing more than a small wall mounted fan to dispense the smoke. I would say on an average day my mother will get through 60 and my sister 20 so anything in the room stinks of nicotine.
When brought up with them it causes a riot with them both being in denial about it doing any harm to anyone. My mother claims its her only vice and what keeps her alive (she has a bad back and sits at a dining room table for 12+ hours a day & has suffered from cancer, has diabetes and high blood pressure) and my sister thinks its fine (She has had 5+ strokes and suffers from vasculitis)
They also seen no harm in chain smoking around my pregnant GF again claiming "the fans on"
More recently the baby has mimicked the opening and lighting of a cigarette which really pushed it over the edge. When I explained that this is not only crazy but would also be socially looked down upon they went nuts.
When I push the issue I get told to find someone else to look after her but thats not helping anyone and changes need to be made. What would you say to your family if they were acting like this ?

Heres a tip... either accept it or stop relying on your family to help you out.
I can see why you are saying it, they are saying that they always smoke (its an addiction and they can't beat it)... you either accept that they smoke and YOU are contributing to your kids bad health, or that you find someone else and pay?
Find someone else to help you, if not take the hit, you will not persuade someone to help you all/part-of day when they are used to chain smoking and then complain they are doing it.

Oh yes absolutely the best person to be babysitting. OP if this situation is for real then your family are being extremely ignorant. I'd look to change your childminding arrangements pronto. You are really not being very good parents to allow this.

Step 1 - Remove your child from your mother and sister's presence instantly.
Step 2 - Make sure she doesn't go back.
Step 3 - Tell them you won't let them be in the same room as her if they're smoking.
Anything else is secondary.
This, it's fking crazy to let a baby be around any amount of smoke let alone that much second hand smoke, if it was an eciggarette it might not be as bad.Step 2 - Make sure she doesn't go back.

No they are not. They are putting the long term health of your child at significant risk and this should cease immediately.
This. It's not only disgusting but frankly it's harmful to the poor child. Can't believe they think smoking around a toddler is fine! The mind boggles.Gassing Station | Health Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
