Mechanism found - long term vegetarianism links to DNA changes to aid digestion of vegetables. Add modern "vegetable" (i.e. seed) oils and get inflammation and cancer risk:

The article also closes by stating:

"However other research suggests vegetarianism lowers the risk of diabetes, stroke and obesity."

Yes of course. However, the link to ancestory for vegetarians is something they can't really change. The cancers caused by eating red meat aren't linked to ancestory, so those that eat red meat can do something about their long term health.

I see no-one picked up on the more interesting nugget:

I doubt I am alone in wondering if the industrially produced "new foods" are not very good for us; including the seed oils, either high temperature or chemically extracted. It seems there may be potential issues, ironically for those best adapted to digesting vegetables.

"Never eat anything your (great) grandmother could not identify" indeed.

As for other risks, I suspect our diet of largely wheat washed down with sugar is at the root of much obesity/diabetes/metabolic syndrome, though eating chips three times a day probably doesn't help our friends in the North.
