Heart rate/pulse monitors

My dear old Mum still goes to the gym three times a week, it's her birthday in a couple of weeks and would like a new pulse rate monitor but ideally one that just works off the wrist-strap/watch bit rather than using a chest strap.

My understanding is that these tend to be a bit flaky and unreliable but I'd be very happy if anyone could recommend one that would do the job.
