Sudden blindness in 1 eye

I don't know if anybody has ever had the same but I was sat at my desk, felt a little faint and suddenly lost all vision in my right eye.

If I closed my left eye I couldn't see anything except grey. After about 2 minutes i'd got vision back on the top half of my right eye but then everything grey below this.

After a further 5 minutes everything is back to normal.

I had a 10 mile fast (for me) cycle in this morning and do feel a little hungry but other than that nothing different really.

Has anybody else had anything similar.

Yes, but it could be anything.
See a doctor even if everything's ok now and they can try and work out what caused it.
It may be nothing or it may be something.

Hi, no headache or anything, everything feels back to normal.

I'd be ringing up NHS direct or getting someone to drive me to A&E, not posting on a car forum

I had the same effect - although it didn't go away. It was a detached retina. Woke up with no vision in the eye. 90 minutes later I was in Moorfields, they operated in the afternoon and I was home for dinner.

I'm a doctor and I used to work in an eye hospital. If anyone could help you on this forum, it would be me.

I had the same a month ago. Went to the optician. They said it was 99% a retinal migraine. They dont always come with an actual headache.

This sounds similar as its gone back to normal. Mine happened in a meeting, lasted for 10 minutes then went back to normal.

Defo call a doctor though ASAP. Mine just told me to go to my optician.

Im not. But if the OP was that worried they would have gone or called their doctor like I did.

Only saying what mine told me with the exact same symptoms.

I dont expect anyone to actually take medical advice from a forum.

Spoken to the Dr who said could be a number of things and just heading off to the walk-in centre now which is only a couple of hundred yards away.

Quick update.

Been confirmed as retinal migraine by eye casualty so nothing to worry about unless happens frequently or have other symptoms.

Said probably caused by not eating properly this morning when cycling in and having low blood sugar.

Glad I got it checked out as my reaction to any medical issue is 'it'll be alright. i'll just ignore it'

Similar thing happened to someone I know, since been diagnosed with MS.

That's what happend to me but why I said in my OP that it could be anything so get it checked out.
Luckily OP has had it checked out and his mind is at rest now

In all seriousness OP good to know its nothing major. Doctor/hopsital was the right call despite what I may have said previously.

Mine was brought on by stress thinking I had something like MS due to other symptoms which turned out to be something else.

Havent had another one.

Briefly reminded me distinctly of a near identical thread on a different forum with a very different ending (the OP and the eye doctor are both members of PH as well)
