Couldn't really think of an appropriate title. My daughter had an accident at the weekend. She fell off a horse and broke her arm. Was a very bad break, compound fracture which means the bone broke through the skin.

I didn't see it but rushed up there. There was a lot of blood, my daughter must be harder than Chuck Norris as she didn't cry at all and was very brave. I saw the wound at the hospital and excuse the graphic description but I saw the entire bone sticking out of a massive gash in her arm. She had surgery and has been let home from hospital today and recovery is fine. Surgeon said she was very lucky not to have damaged any arteries or nerves and said it is a very bad injury.

Anyway since then it has fked me up. I keep crying when I talk about it, I keep reliving what I am imagine happened in my head and I am angry at myself for not being there to to do something or stop it.

Is that normal?

I know it was just an accident and they happen and it could have been a hell of a lot worse.

Anyway, the paramedics and hospital were great. The paramedics decided to take her to the JR in Oxford as it is a much better hospital than our local. They were great there.

Yes it's normal if you're not used to seeing it - and even if you are, it's a lot harder to take in when it affects someone you know and care about. Sounds like a pretty severe incident so I wouldn't worry about thinking about it, if that makes sense. It's a perfectly reasonable reaction.

Its normal. If it keeps going then its not but having that for a few weeks/months is normal. I'm a doctor and while you do mostly get used to things like this you still have cases where talking about them affects you. Compound fractures are nasty and (i'm assuming your daughter is young) these kind of injuries on children/teenagers are pretty horrible for all involved.

Glad she is ok.

It is so, so normal.

After my daughter had massive surgery I was the one in shock, she was basically fine and out of ICU within 3 days of being opened up stem to stern (toddlers are incredible) - I hadn't really known what to expect and it really knocked me sideways.

If things stay rough after your daughter's recovery is well under way, please have a chat with your GP, it is not unusual or unreasonable to need a hand getting yourself back on an even keel after an experience like that.

Thanks all. Feel a little better today. Chuffing knackered tough, not much sleep last few days.

Daughter was asking how long before she can ride a horse again. Er, how about never? Need a new hobby I think.
