Best way to get rid of a big verucca

I've had a verucca on the bottom of my foot for several years now. I've never really bothered to try getting rid of it but it is starting to bother me a bit now as its quite painful if I put direct pressure on to it. Also i suspect that I have changed the way I stand/walk/run to avoid it and am getting knock-on ankle and knee problems as a result 
So whats the best course of treatment for getting rid of it? I'm not registered with a doctor so probably easier to go direct to a podiatrist I guess?

i had mine electrically removed at a local beauty salon.

just brilliant, i'd tried all the old wives tales, bazuka, etc and nothing had made a difference in 3 years. it was huge.
3 sessions and it was gone, and not come back. best £45 i ever spent!

Im currently in the process of getting rid of a monster one on my heel, its taking ages but it is going gradually. Using Cuplex verruca gel.

Freeze it off with liquid nitrogen - Scholl do a great product for £10 from most chemists. Just rub it down with a nail file first and then touch the pad on it for 30-40 secs, leave for 2 weeks, see how it is and repeat if necessary. Much better than Bazooka and only 1 application may be needed.

Your GP may offer this, sadly mine didn't. Thanks for all the replies (even the ones involving fire and axes)
I have actually once tried a course of bazooka or similar but I was a bit rubbish at putting it on every night so it probably wasn't as effective as it could have been. Think I'm better off with a course of treatments with a professional where it will actually get done properly!

See if you can get hold of Aldara cream. (GP Prescription only, IIRC) I had a pretty nasty wart on my thumb last year- painful to the extent that I was regularly wolfing down ibuprofen.
All the usual treatments (Bazuka/freeeze spray etc) made no difference, but Aldara blitzed it incredibly quickly.
Normally prescribed for warts in Other Places.

I once had them terrible as a kid - had to soak my feet in formaldehyde every evening, had professional freeze treatment every week for a while. Grim. Wouldnt wish it on my enemy.
The solution's simple - get a bottle of reasonable whisky and a soldering iron. Plug the soldering iron in. Whilst it's reaching temperature, chug a third of the bottle of whisky and then stab the soldering into the verruca for as long as you can stand. (Optional: stare at a photo of Dolph Lundgren in Rocky 4 whilst you do this)
Works 100% of the time, every time.

Whilst it's reaching temperature, chug a third of the bottle of whisky and then stab the soldering into the verruca for as long as you can stand. Meh - you say that but professional freeze treatment is just cell damage by temperature. Acid treatment is just cell damage by acid. (etc etc) This way it's done in 2 secs and costs nothing.
