The new fad, (is it one?) seems to be these foam rollers for after running etc.

Does anyone use them? And are they worth it or am I looking at wasting time and money on a crazy scheme?

If you do use them, any hints on how to use them properly? OR websites that have actual instructions?

Thanks Ph massive

I used them at a bootcamp thing I did a few years ago. It certainly got the knots out of my calves and got my back popping.

I'm not sure if it actually did any good, but it felt pretty good smile

They aren't a fad, its basically a way of having a deep tissue massage, they work and hurt like a bh when done right.

A roller is about a tenner, not exactly going to break the bank. It can also be worth having a skipping rope too, bit of skipping to loosen you up pre/post run or on your rest days.

I have to admit that I used to laugh at the roller brigade and was very sceptical. Bring on a hamstring injury and for a bit of curiosity I tried on at the gym before and after my session.

I went out and got one that day.

Really helps with soreness and using it daily is definitely helping with the stiffness in my legs.

So not a fad! Glad many of you have had positive results.
Do you know how to actually use them then?

I use them every week at Pilates class they are really good you need a firm one though so try a few. An yeah like people say they are Cheap so even if you hate it not a huge loss an you can always pass it to a friend to try

Buy a long one though about a meter so you can get full range of positions out of it. John Lewis do them (£29 is a bit steep)

As much as I hate using them, Sports Direct do them very cheaply.

I had a foam roller and it fairly quickly went soft/wore out.

I replaced it with something similar that I saw in TK Maxx. It is a plastic tube with dense, knobbly foam around it. I much prefer it to the foam roller.

I swear by them , a physio introduced me to them and used them every few days since . I get reoccurring tight IB band , a 10 minute foam roller session sorts it out.

I also cycle most days quite a hilly route which hits my quads hard , foam rollering really helps keep my legs fresh

I need to buy a decent one , I used a 90cm 10£ from Argos which I wore out after 2months and now have a equally cheap pink 'Davina" one which does the job

It will hurt a lot at first , if it does its a sign you need it ! Several runners I know couldn't hack the pain

also be careful not to overdo it , I spent too long once on my calves once and pulled them and they ached like mad the next day

Plenty of videos on YouTube , also diagrams on Google , also my roller came with various diagrams

The first time you roll your quads, Itb, hip flexors etc. Might be excruciating.

It gets much easier and less painful during subsequent attempts.

It must be doing something.

I've used one on my back for a few years. More control than trying to direct the wife to stand on the right bit.

I bought one of these as its the same as my physio had and was durable and very firm, it didn't seem to compress as badly as foam and always retains its shape.
Sadly its out of stock in amazon these days but you may find one elsewhere.

I swear by mine. I suffer from tight hamstrings, quads, ITB and glutes.

It's not a miracle cure, but it keeps me running and helps in my stretching routine.

I have a knobbly one that's very dense plastic. It is torture when you first use it but you get used to it eventually.

Instructions on YouTube.

I had a smooth foam one - these are crap as they soften up over a few weeks and get a dent in them. Go for as hard a roller as you can handle.

They work, I have been known to use a wine bottle in a pinch! Not great as they're a bit small, but plenty firm enough. hehe

I had one of these. I had it for years. It had 10 new points and 14 new rollers.
