Dehydration issues
Discussion
Wonder if anyone can help?
Last week I started producing less urine and most was produced at night. Saw my doctor as I thought it was a kidney problem. My test results are back and my kidneys are fine. The doctor felt this was a dehydration problem.
Over the last few days I've increased my fluid intake to 2.5 litres a day. However I seem to be caught in a cycle that I don't understand. I start the day dehydrated - dry mouth and dark pee. Throughout the day I take on fluids and gradually as the day goes on my pee gets better. Through the night I wake up and have 1 or 2 pees that are plentiful and perfect straw colour. Yet within a couple of hours I'm up and about and back to dehydration.
The week before I had a cold and suspect I may have had a low level UTI (ache around the bladder and smell pee). Also I think the hydration my have been a longer term thing as probably wasn't drinking as much during the hot weather over the last couple of weeks.
Is it typical of chronic dehydration or does anyone think something strange is going on?

Dark pee and dehydration is a sign of 'something'.
Your 'kidney function' blood tests was probably a check of your creatinine levels. If those are 'normal' then something else is wrong.
For kidney problems the usual advice is to cut down drastically on sodium and potassium to the point of no added salt, stay off processed foods, condiments and potassium-rich foods. Google 'kidney diet.' Avoid alchohol altogether.
As a start, get your blood pressure checked, either at the docs or with one of those home BP monitors from the pharmacy. The Omron ones agree with my doctor, and a couple of days of hourly readings can be useful. The kidneys regulate blood pressure. However, coffee and stress also affect them.
A lot of kidney problems go undiagnosed until the blood-in-my-pee stage. They often show up during lung/abdomen scans.
There's growing evidence that NSAIDs such as Neurofen kill off the nephrons in the kidneys. Some say paracetomol does the same.
But it might well just be a bact. infection after the cold. Or you could be sweating too much due to an infection.
If it lasts more than a month it needs investigation; secondary creatinine level checks and possibly a scan if they show an increase. Stay hydrated.
Nota Bene: I am not a doctor, but I had a kidney removed with Stage 1 cancer. It was Not Fun.
