Dental Implants
Discussion
Not had any done but I've been placing them for over 10 years
Nothing is 100% but the vast majority should last for life if taken care of properly and bar any other medical problems.
Things to watch out for:
1) The make of implant.
As with everything there is good, bad and downright ugly. Straumann, Nobel, Biomet3i and Dentsply are some good ones. There are other good ones and literally thousands of average and awful ones. Ask what is going to be put in your mouth considering the time it is going to stay there.
I use Straumann which I think is the best, it's German-Swiss.
2) Is there a dedicated surgical block where everything is decontaminated and everyone wears sterile one-use clothing? This is jaw surgery and it's best not to play around with surgery in an everyday dusty room full of bacteria.
3) Single use instruments. Yes we use tiny drills amongst other things to do this. Would you prefer a brand new set or a set of drills that has been used on 10-20 patients before you, even if they've been sterilised?
As far as prices go, I think in the UK they start are £2000-£3000 for one implant and the tooth on top from what I've read. Of course it would be nice to know for the most expensive ones you're getting a high quality implant
I'm in Paris and the price in my practice is €2000 (£1700). For multiple implants I do discounts which is normal as once you have everything prepared for the first implant the following ones have less overheads IYSWIM.

Forgot to say, as far as patient comfort goes I am always surprised how little tenderness people have after each procedure. It is very rare to have any real discomfort.
During the procedure, if the work is done in the lower jaw, sometimes there can be some sensitivity during the operation but a quick little addition of anaesthetic usually solves that immediately. With the upper jaw this almost never happens.
I'll stop now as don't want this to look like some kind of s

I had a top front tooth implant a few years back after my crowned tooth of 25yrs split up into the root causing me a lot of pain and discomfort.
The implant procedure took over several weeks with a couple of visits and was totally painless. I have been back a few times to the Dentist just to check all is well and so far all good.
I used a Dental Practice fairly local to me in S. Wales, the Dentist/Dr. used to be a neighbour of mine. Cost me £1500 with a nice bit of discount from him
.
Well worth it...

I've just had a Biomet one fitted and awaiting the crown at the moment. Cant wait to have the tooth back.
I was cr@pping myself on the whole process but it was so straight forward I couldn't believe it. just make sure you get a good surgeon to do it as they can be done well or badly.
The guy who did mine was one of the team that did the botched bodies series on C4 a while ago and he was brilliant.

I've had two implants top front for about 5 years. No discomfort at all in the fitting and they been great since although one crown fell off because the cement wasn't strong enough but that was easily fixed.
In fact I was so impressed that during a check up I suggested that we should have all our teeth removed and replaced with implants. Even though this would have earned him a tidy sum to his credit he said real teeth are the best and should be preserved where possible.
