Hi all, had a bit of a debate about whether to post this on food or in here but as I thought it was related more to health....

I'm drastically trying to cut carbs from my diet, as I consume a lot of bread and pasta at uni and it's making me a bit fat.
Usual caveats of being too poor, too busy and too lazy to go to the gym so I'm tackling the diet end instead.
What I want to know is, having never tried one, are protein powder shakes filling at all? My usual breakfast is toast because it is very quick in the morning and very filling (keeping my going until lunch). I've found that cereal, breakfast biscuits etc aren't as good.
Before I shell out 30 quid on a tub of powder I'm after some user experience of them? I've been looking at an "ultra lean" version designed for weight loss rather than bulking up, have people had much success with them by replacing one meal a day?

Thanks,
Matt

carbs don't make you fat excess calories against what you require do.

Pprotein is thought of the great wonder food, yes it takes longer for the body to process and uses more calories to break down into energy, and more no effect on your GI level.
If you want to cut or lower calories I would eat more eggs, lean meats, like steak and chickens and fish.
instead of bread use a weight watcher wrap, stick scrambled egg in it and you have a tasty meal, around 350 calories. increase fresh vegetables and decrease carbs, cut out beer.

Say without exercise you burn 2500 calories if you remove 500 calories a day you will lose 1 pound of fat a week. Add some moderate exercise and add a bit more to it as well as get fitter.

It won't work unless you exercise and put your body to work.

Just eat less. I only have protein shakes when they're giving samples away FOC so about once a year.

My breakfast is just gruel. About 50kcals.

Why not just cut out fat so you can actually burn the carbs (or does this just work on me ??).

Go without breakfast altogether. Just have a mug coffee.

Your body will soon adapt, and as long as you don't compensate by eating more at lunch etc, you'll also lose a bit of weight too.

The whole breakfast thing is a bit overated, eat when you are hungry.

The carb thing, I used to have Scrambled eggs with two rounds of buttered toast, have done away with the white bread, I have three eggs instead, it is strange at first but who says you have to have bread ? plenty of things you can do to make it more interesting, add meat, cheese etc.

It is very much about calories in vs out, however it is more complex than that, breakfast cereal tends to spike blood sugar then it crashes, then you get hungry sooner, the same calories from a more protein rich source keep you not thinking about your stomach longer, was talking to the cleaner at work, she is 20 st stone plus, down from 25 but still huge, she is starving herself between cereal bars, she is diabetic and giving her Pancreas a daily pasting, she is also on some fat binder from the docs that makes you stop absorbing fat from crap food, she says she can have a Greggs Cheese and Bacon twist or something if she has a tablet half and hour before, makes you realise how far off people are on what they should be eating.

In which case she likes to live dangerously. One of the ways those drugs work, besides preventing you absorbing the fat, is forcing you onto a low fat diet because the consequences of undigested fat going all the way through you are very unpleasant.

Feel sorry for her, she has lost 5 stone or more but is still probably 8 stones overweight, imagine doing a cleaning job whilst carrying a 12/13 stone person on your back.

I get annoyed at my 2 to 3 stone extra, getting less though, hopefully nothign breaks this time but whatever happen, not going to let life knock me off track.

Yes, it's not something I'd wish upon anyone. From what you say she's doing something about it though.

Has anyone mentioned cutting out sugar where possible?

Ive lost about 3/4 of a stone in 4 weeks through low carb / no sugar. Exercise has also played a part.

p.s i'm not a fatty, was 12.11 now i'm 12.3

I cut out bread and sugar almost from day one when I started down this path. the results from removing these evils were quite startling..
